Yeah, it was a great weekend and todays game was particularly fun. The men's and women's teams won all their games 1-0 and it was nice to cap it all off by winning the DC College Cup.

I hate to put a damper on the conversation because it was a very good game and I thought it was the best student section turn out of the weekend - but does anyone know the medical status of the American player who was hurt?

It was a great time for everybody, and I think we're definitly establishing ourselves.
I don't know what happened to the AU player, but by everyone's accounts it was an injury to his upper chest area, around the collarbone, and not a neck injury (which obviously is a lot more serious). Hopefully he'll be ok and we'll get word of it somehow.

I don't know as we're positive that it was not a neck injury. They took all of the precautions and someone said that it looked to be upper chest, but who knows what they knew? Hopefully we'll see an update in the paper or the AU website soon.

I was down on the field working, and doing my best to listen to what everyone was saying. The guy has at least a concussion as a result of the elbow from the Georgetown player (I spoke to some people taping the game, and I was told that it was in fact a "very cheap shot"), and I gather the extra precautions were to avoid causing further injury, so hopefully he will be fine in the end.
As for the student section...I was impressed with the enthusiasm (a gazillion times better than the lameness that was Friday's game), but for the love of Pele, PLEASE come up with some soccer-related cheers. "Airball" on a wide shot was funny...once. The "Hey! You suck!" is overplayed as well. I was incredibly disappointed that there was no "Ole" song that I hear in the background of almost every soccer telecast I see (which isn't as many as it used to be, but still). Maybe it could be turned from "Ole, ole ole ole, ole, ole" to "Ho-ya, ho-ya ho-ya ho-ya..." or something like that. I dunno. But "ole" definitely needs to be a part of the next game's repertoire.
And whoever said "He wasn't pushed, he's just that bad!"...you got a lot of props from the game staff. Good one. Second-best went to the guy who told AU midfielder Garth Juckem "Garth, I have a condo in your head!" after Juckem started talking to the crowd.

I feel that my condo comment was inaccurate - its more of a time-share with RB, 007, Cali, and others.

its more of a time-share with RB, 007, Cali, and others. Now there's a scary premise for a sitcom if I've ever heard one. It sounds like everyone had a good time this weekend. I got to come on Saturday (I wish I could have on Friday and Sunday but I had to work) and it was nice to see so many people come out for the game and do a great job supporting the team. The big question now is: how much are the soccer games going to be a part of Hoya Blue's plans for the rest of the year? It looks like the men's team has three more home games on weekends this year, and four more on weekday afternoons. I didn't get to make either of the men's games this weekend, but it sounded like a lot of people showed up for "Hoya Blue Soccer Weekend". Maybe it's worth keeping the support going--not like you have to BBQ again, but I always thought soccer probably didn't get as much support as it should have and could have when I was still at GU.

Yeah, I wanted to come up with soccer specific cheers based on European soccer cheers and use them at the games but its difficult to get people here to do that. I had a couple ideas but people just feel comfortable doing what they know and that is why they end up doing basketball cheers or baseball cheers like TBird ending up doing involuntarily. So while I wish we could have real soccer cheers I doubt that will happen and if it does it will take a while. I kind of disliked the basketball cheers at first too, but then I just realized that the most important thing is to just be loud, and if the only way for people to get loud is to do the cheers they know and feel comfortable with then thats what we should do, at least for now.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about the basketball cheers too. I don't know how many more soccer games I'll be at this year, because frankly I'm just not a big soccer fan, but hopefully the new group, Hoya Hooligans, can come up with some stuff. "Condo in your head" was a classic by St Pete, I actually followed it up towards #20, who had a big curly mop on his head, saying "Hey, #20, I have a condo in your hair!" It actually drew a response from the AU Coach. He asked us if we went to Mass this morning. Seriously. I would also like to know the status us #12 on AU, but if nothing was mentioning in the game recaps, then I guess it's safe to assume it's not overly serious.

CA--that mass comment came after we all started chanting "Watch your language" at the AU player that was swearing. He yelled at us "have some class". I responded by telling him that his player swearing offended our delicate Catholic ears. That's why he said that he hadn't seen any of us at mass this morning.

It's funny how people get sensitive easily, telling us to "have some class". I try to be pretty cognizant of the line between being a spirited fan and being a jackass and I think we were on the proper side of the line all weekend. So long as you don't personally attack anyone or get really vulgar/offensive I think everything is ok, and I don't think we really did any of that. Maybe the AU people were just ornery because they were losing, because their player got hurt, the officiating, or something else, but their people didn't take too kindly to us. Whatever, I think we behaved fine. And it was definitly ludicrous for their coach to suggest that we should have some class when we chanted "Watch your language".... we were profanity-free all day, while his player was the one dropping F bombs on the referee when there were little kids in the stands... perhaps he should've directed his frustration at his own player for making that mistake rather than us for ribbing him about it.... but it's all good.

That's a nice idea CA, but lets be serious, we are the Hoya Hooligans right now and will have to be for the rest of the year. We need to keep making it exciting and hope that more people start joining us for the games. If we just pull out and expect a couple of freshmen who signed up to be a part of the Hoya Hooligans to lead this it will just completely dissapear. Maybe by next year we can start making it more self run, but its gonna need at least one season of us getting it going, and even then Hoya Blue will need to be there because there just aren't thousands of fans at the games that can make up for the loss of 12 die-hards. Now, if we can manage to get about 30-40 students who seriously cheer and we get a really loud student section going it will be really fun for everyone, even people who don't really like soccer that much. I think its our duty as Hoya Blue to at least attend the weekend games that dont conflict with football and be there cheering on the team as loud as we can, so if you want to be on the board and care about Georgetown sports you should plan on being at as many games as we can go to.

I think that we do need to be promoting the game more widely - I am not sure how many people knew that the games were happening or about the BBQ and still there was a good turn out on word of mouth alone - but still that does not sustain an organization. We need to be doing more to reach out to people outside of the hard core fans that would show up if there wasn't an HB presence - the sort of success that can make this year even more special for HB is the continued outreach to the casual fan of Georgetown athletics and getting them to come to even more games (and also purchase t-shirts and season tickets in the process).

Agree with St. Pete as far as promotions go. The only flyers I saw were in Red Square, and ironically I only saw them today, after the fact. As a resident of Village A, I would be more than willing to cover my section of campus with flyers. For events like these, we should advertise to every sector of campus. I think its our duty as Hoya Blue to at least attend the weekend games that dont conflict with football and be there cheering on the team as loud as we can, so if you want to be on the board and care about Georgetown sports you should plan on being at as many games as we can go to. I guess I'm technically not part of Hoya Hooligans because I'm not on the e-mail list, but I see your point. Of course you know I want to be on the board, but I also have to work at at least some of the games, so we'll see how it goes. But I'll do my best, you know that.

It's obvious that we need to advertise more for these events, but the first week was a special situation due the amount of stuff we had to do in such a short period of time. We were a bit overwhelmed trying to get Hoya Blue running and it we didnt exactly have unlimited amounts of time to flyer. Once we get settled in and have an official board in place the advertising will pick up and hopefully it will be as succesfull as the events themselves have been so far.

Clearly he was unaware of the 6:00pm, 8:00pm, and 11:15pm Sunday masses and that Georgetown is a vibrant religiously diverse campus. How insensitive ... I wish the AU coaching staff had more class ... Lol. There was a pretty good crowd yesterday and but its tough to say how many came out due to HB promotion. I don't think all that many people came out because of the barbecue, but some may have. A lot of the people were likely there because the opponent was an area team, so a lot of the AU people made it to the game. It'll be interesting to see what kind of turnout we get for future soccer events, when we play teams that aren't local. I agree that we need to promote the games more broadly, but it's definitly going to be an incremental thing. If some of the people who were there this weekend go back and tell their friends how they had a good time, hopefully next game we'll pick up a few more people and it will snowball over time. I also think we'll get a promotions boost post-SAC fair when our mailing list becomes more complete (as of now, it is probably like 75% freshmen). For now, I think we'll be ok sticking with basically what we did this weekend-- bringing the "HB core" (those of us doing the barbecuing before the games + our close friends) out to the games, and just making a ton of noise ourselves. If we can keep that core intact, that's a great start because it's enough people to create a fun atmosphere. Additionally, we can promote to all of those who are on our current email list, and hope for the best. We can also put up the traditional flyers, or maybe some of the fancier athletic department ones, and hope for the best. Finally, we all have to do our own part in spreading the word to people we know. If we can make every game fun and keep momentum going, things will improve themselves. If we can get the word out there that soccer (or other sports when the time comes) games are a really fun place to be, people will come, it's just a matter of time. You know what would be awesome? Some pub from the Hoya, for the Hooligans or for HB itself. That would help spread the word and hopefully create some buzz that "Hey, somethings going on at these soccer games up on North Kehoe." That's probably a ways down the line but it would be a really good thing for what we're trying to build.
