Well, this is going to bring up some memories: -The NYU game in McDonough; we destroyed a nationally ranked NYU team with two future NBA players( Barry Kramer and ??Hairston-forget). The German cheer was part of the "animal section" for years at Georgetown. This was action was pilloried by the famous NY Daily New sprotwriter Dick Young who percieved it as insenstive and anti Semitic; we took a lot of national heat. -the Sweet 16 win over Maryland in 1980 marked the start of the Georgetown rise to national prominence. Maryland had two future NBA players -sat under the basket the same year when we played Iowa in the reginal final in Philly. Iowa made something like 25'17 shot in the second half; Ed Spriggs missed a bread away dunk and then in the final second Big Sky Shelton caught his finger in the net when he went up for a tying basket; great game; a loss -GU vs St Johns in the Garden(('82); we were up someting like 42-9 or so in the first half; the national awareness of the Georgetown "D" -courtside at the NCAA final in New Orleans when some unknow punk Michael Jordan banked in a shot with ten seconds left, we run down court and the the famous Freddy Brown pass. NBA in the game: Patrick, Billy Martin, Sleepy Floyd, Sam Perkins, Jordan, James Worthy-not bad. -1984 semifinal in Seattle-Georgetown buries Kentucky; nervous after the first hafl; met at half time by a bunch of bloated KU fans who said "boys, just wait till the second half and you will see some real KENTUCKY basketball". I never thought Kentucky would score -1984 Final over Houston. Enough said -1985 Semifinal win but loss to Villanova in final. Sitting in the stands you just sensed bad karma. -Butler's shot in Toronto against Memphis. More notable for the partying in a great town despite snow. -every big east tournament win -years of darkness- a glimmer of hope in Pittsburg

It would help all of us to be able to read your posts if they were a bit easier to decipher. Would you please honor this request in future posts? Thanks.

I'm really impressed, DFW, but I don't think so. The guy in the picture is wearing tails and doesn't look at all like Dick Sheridan. As I recall the scene, for that one game he wore a German military uniform, at least the coat, and he was in the bleachers surrounded with students.

Inigo, were you there too? The president of the Yard at the time might have been Gov. Frank Keating, the former governor of Oklahoma. Nevada, you have a good memory. It was in fact Frank Keating and he was, shall we say, displeased at having to fly to NY and apologize. I looked up the record. In the '65-'66 season we played NYU twice. The first time was in the ECAC Holiday Festival in NY and we won 88-87. Then a few weeks later we played them in McDonough on TV. The final score was 104-73! They were ranked at the time and were even more displeased than Frank Keating.

Thanks, ahoya3, for reminding me of Hairston. He went by the name of Happy and at one point during the game he got so mad he slammed the basketball on the floor and it went twenty feet in the air. He got a technical and the animal section went to work on him: "Happy not happy? Ohhhh"

Inigo, you have a better memory than me about the NYU (about HH slamming the ball). I just remember the big win and Frank's scoring 29 in the 1st half. And I don't think that was Dick Sheridan either. Dick was a pretty good friend of Jim Barry.
Frank Keating being my classmate, I have to tell a story that Frank told at the 30th reunion of my class. It was about our other classmate and Hoya bballer, Gen. Jim Jones (now NATO Supreme Allied Commander). When Frank was governor of OK, he invited the Commandant of the Marine Corps (JJ) out to OKlahoma for the Marines birthday. When he was introducing the general, he was going through quite a tribute building him up, when Jim stopped him and said "Frank, you don't have to make the introduction so praiseworthy, I voted for you as President of the Yard, I even campaigned for you on the east campus." Frank, turned to Jim and said "Gen. Jones, Jimmy Jones!" He hadn't realized until that point that Gen. James Jones, Commandant of the Marine Corps was Jimmy Jones, his classmate at Georgetown.

Nevada, that is a great story! I love it. My recollection, though, is that the Yard was the College Student Council and that the three East Campus schools had a completely separate student council with its own president, etc. If that is so, how could Jim Jones, SFS '66. have campaigned for Frank Keating on the east campus or voted for him?

The photo comes from the 1966 yearbook (a $5.00 purchase on Ebay) with the tagline "Let's Go Violets!", a play on NYU's nickname. Maybe YDB missed the real person, too. (Also, as to Sir Saxa's earlier comment on Lic's capitalization, if he's using a Blackberry or Treo to access the page, it's not as easy to capitalize things correctly with a smalelr mobile device like those.)

I did well in English in HS, but I got a C or C+ from Easy A Harmon. Well, inigo, I did think that the President of the Yard was a college position, so I don't know about the verity of Jimmy's statement. I have wondered about that part of the quote. Actually, I wasn't at the reunion, but it was relayed to me by another classmate. Maybe it is the selective memory that plagues us in our 6th or 7th decade.

Great posts!! I especially appreciate WBH's list.
Here are a couple of my favorite memories:
Favorite Chvotkin Call: "Off the glass!! Off the glass!!! off the glass!!!!" in the NCAA win over LSU. For some reason that game wasn't on TV in the DC area (not that I'm still bitter about it more than 15 years later).
Favorite taunt of an opposing player (though it wasn't very mature): "Hurley's a virgin!" in the early nineties ACC/Big East challenge win over Duke.
Favorite regular season game ending: UConn vs. Gtown at the Cap Centre (early 90s). Tie game in final seconds of the game. Huskies with the ball. A Chris Smith (?)pass bounces off of Tate George's (?) face and into Joey Brown's hands. Joey Brown drives the length of the floor and lays the ball in as time expires.

You are correct. I talked to my buddy who was also at the game his recollection was that Big Sky got his hand caught when going up to contest the layup at the end of the game. Senior moment.

tgo mentioned the UTEP game, featuring a packed McDonough- great fun- they scored their 9th and 10th points of the first half with under a minute to go. The chant I remember from that game was for their diminutive red-head point guard , Gym Bice (yes, G-Y-M)...who inspired chants of "Opie, Opie!" Should have won the NIT that year- damn Gophers.

Lic and ahoya, classmates of Dennis Caesar? Also, a former pres, but of course he wasn't in the college. And I guess he wasn't president of the Yard.

Dennis was a premed in the college and then we were room mates in medical school. He played a lot of intramural hoops and was in fabulous shape. Dennis is a urologist in Fresno.
