I would even take a science fan, or a lacrosse fan.

It would be cheaper if you just got everyone library cards and gave them a good book-list...

Meh. A lot of places I'd rather have the money go than the Center for Muslim and Christian Understanding. Not a fan of Esposito or the Center as a whole.

That might be true...but if you have a problem, then we can just step outside...(in my best South-Boston accent)

"The Center will be renamed The HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding."
There's a mouthful.

Prince Alwaleed's gift will allow the Center, founded in 1993 as the only program of its kind to build stronger bridges between the Muslim world and the West as well as between Islam and Christianity, to strengthen its mission. The founding of the Center was made possible through the initiatives and generous support of Hasib Sabbagh, a longtime supporter and former member of the Georgetown University Board of Directors. The gift will endow three faculty chairs, expand programmatic and academic outreach activities, provide new scholarship support for students, broaden opportunities for research and policy discussions and expand library facilities. The professorships and scholarships funded by HRH Prince Alwaleed's gift also will be named in his honor.
I can't imagine that's going to use up all $20 million... he's got to like sports in SOME capacity...

Maybe HRH would prefer the soccer program?

I'd be in favor of it going to any of the area's where it is more sorely needed. Science- we have 50 year old labs. Soccer- we have about 1 full scholarship that has to be divided up between players. Kinda hurts recruiting. Basketball- we need an arena on campus!

The $20 million is an perpetual endowment which will probably return $800-900K a year. According to Tuesday's Post article, it will fund three faculty chairs, some student scholarships, and a few other initiatives.
Interreligious dialogue is a big part of the DeGioia administration so they're certainly not going to divert this to science or any other underfunded project.

Having worked in development at GU, I can assure you that DeGioia had/has no say over where this money goes. Sometimes donors who are very loyal to GU will ask where they can make a difference and hear suggestions. But for those with no connection to the university, GU is just THRILLED that they donate anything, let alone $20 million. GU does not have a good track record in landing big gifts -- we are still one of only a few top 25 institutions that has not gotten a $100+ million gift yet. We should be very happy about this.

What's the biggest gift in Georgetown history?

Depends how you count. Bob McDonough's $30 million is officially the largest. But Virginia Toulmin in 1997 pledged to the med school a trust that, at the time, was around $60 million. The university will not get that until her death. I have no idea what the trust is worth today. Hopefully she didn't invest in Enron.

I can't wait until one day there's a $20 million donation worthy of being posted on the HoyaTalk board...

Ok, here's one to kick around: suppose someone donates $20 million, unrestricted, to the athletic department. Where do you put it to make the most impact, mindful that nothing gets built overnight?
Choose one, two, or up to three categories.
