Duquesne is going to be a really tough opponent for us this year and I sure hope the players don't underestimate them- don't feel good about that game after this sloppy play against an inferior opponent.
That said, can't be too upset- they put them away.

For what it's worth, that last TD covered the spread as far as the Sagarin rankings go. Hopefully that should move the Hoyas inside of 210. I think there'll have to be a lot of improvement by this team between now and when they play the Dukes, or we'll never hear the end of it from our former MAAC opponents.

Yeah it's a blowout as expected. Special teams did very well and the D was solid if occasionally sloppy with penalties and blown coverages. The offense struggled, but they were being led by a back-up QB. Overall, not terrible for the first game. We learn more next week to open the league season. Lafayette with a walk today as well.

Yeah- two or three years ago, GU players would have known not to underestimate the Dukes, but these guys are all PL-era. They should make them watch the tape of them crushing the Crusaders today.

on PL board DFW you said that Howard passed us over to play in Detroit.
Ortiz dinged one. 8-6, was 8-1 5 minutes ago DFW!

Re: Howard, I wasn't trying to suggest that Howard turned down Georgetown to play Alabama State, but that even though both teams had open dates on 9/4, Howard wasn't about to pass on Ford Field for Harbin Field.

Oh- i read more into it than I should have. I think you know I have always thought Howard would make a good "instant rival" and command WaPost coverage.

Answer to the Attendance Quiz: The Post put attendance at 1671.

I think it's time to throw down the gauntlet on students to get that attendance number up.
Lafayette has 2,000 students and drew 4,283 Holy Cross has 2,700 students and drew 6,478. Lehigh has 4,500 students and drew 7,116.
And in the MAAC, where schools are on the precipice of losing football altogether, St. Peter's drew 3,220 on a warm Saturday night in Jersey City.
Obviously, Georgetown can't draw 7,000 at Harbin Field. At least 2,000 should be the standard each home game. No more excuses.

The first thought that came into my mind after reading those attendance figures was "I wonder how many of those people who came to those other games were students."
Unfortunately, they don't track things like that unless Lehigh, Holy Cross, Lafayette, or St. Peter's have really dedicated ticket departments AND they sell/give away student tickets that they then collect and count.
So it's entirely possible that all of those other schools have the same problem GU does attracting student fans to games. Though I'm still going out on a limb and saying GU's problem is worse.
So what does Georgetown do to "throw down the guantlet" and get student fans out to football games? Well, I tried my best to come up with ways to do it when I wrote the second half of the "Generation Burton" column that came out Thurs/Fri. My thought is that GU has less of a "tradition" of following football that the younger fans can grasp. Yes, I read the history sections of this website, and know the team's got history in the traditional sense. But we're a basketball school--like Miami's a football school and even making the Sweet 16 wasn't gonna change that.
So we've got to, in my opinion, build up that tradition of students going to games from scratch--hence my focus on "supplementing" the experience with tailgates and BBQs and other activities for the students to get them out there first. Then you get them more excited in the team and they start coming out for the football and not the ribs and beer.
Promotions from the folks in McD could always be more aggressive, though they do put in a solid effort.
In the end, it comes down to one thing: getting Hoya Blue off their butts and getting them to do their job. I'm afraid I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
Two side issues: (1) how many people do you think we COULD get in the current Harbin Field?; (2) on the subject of the attendance figure, if it's like last year, the "counting" is done by a single work-study type student at the gate with a clicker.

On Saurday the 11th, all Frosh are required to attend a mandatory academic meeting, so I guess recruiting new student fans this Saturday won't fly. Also, I seem to recall seeing something about an alumni golf outing on Homecoming Saturday...that won't help attendance. Seems like the school is part of the problem.

"Nevermind"...I just learned that the golf is stated for Friday of Homecoming weekend, which makes sense. I could of sworn that I saw Saturday, when I saw the first announcement. I still think there must be a way to get more students to the game. Once the boys start winning consistently, that should help.

Have to agree with most of the responses immediately below DFW's post: attendance will invariably correllate with success on the field. Additionally, each of the schools offered as a comparison has a built-in fan base drawn by a perceived 'tradition' (which explains why people still turn out for Holy Cross games), an area in which GU is also sadly lacking.
Only time will cure these particular ils. Well, that and a stadium nice enough to come to and seats comfortable enough to sit in.

I certainly agree that winning always brings the fans. I do have a question, though. I am just getting familiar with Hilltop and it seems to me that on a Saturday, if the weather is OK, why wouldn't a student come by? It's a short walk from anywhere on campus and it's cheaper than a movie.

LBPop, there are a bunch of reasons why my friends and I rarely went to games during my tenure ('95-'99).
There has been a consistent stigma against the football team for a long time at Georgetown. ("We lost to a school for the deaf!")
The stadium (Kehoe at the time) had less seating and was less professional than my high school.
The perception was that the team was also of high school quality.
We were sleeping off Friday night.
We were watching D-I college football on television.
And the few who wanted to go could rarely find another friend who wanted to go.
Heck, aside from my freshman year, it was hard enough getting people to go to basketball games, and that was sometimes with a NCAA Caliber team!
One thought is that the team best be good when the new stadium is there. People will flock to the first few games just to see the stadium in action. If the game is exciting and the fans are into it, it'll pull people back.
