It was a surprise because he was predisposed to attending Duke.No onr gave Hoyas a chance cause most didn't do their homework. They just went off of what the other "experts" (see Jerry Meyer) were saying. Only in the last couple of weeks did people start to take notice. Its funny how the kid kept mentioning GU, but no one thought they were a factor until late. Exactly what I wrote on a Louisville message board. Meyer and Goodman were late in catching on.

This is great news -- man we are on a roll!!! Congrats to JTIII and staff -- and a great decision by Monroe. Based on the description of his game, our offense will fit his game like a glove.

This excerpt from Rivals may be of interest:
"Greg Monroe Scouting Report: A smooth athlete at 6-foot-10, Monroe has an all around skill package that is only going to get better. The lefty has great court awareness and passes the ball extremely well. He is extending his shooting range and is developing scoring moves going to his right. When going to his left, he is a force. Strong on the boards and a shot blocking threat, Monroe also has the quickness to guard on the perimeter. A year younger than most prospects in his class, Monroe has an extremely high ceiling."

He mentioned that everything at LSU is big and GU was more laid back. Isn't that the knock on him that he's too laid back in his game. That actually paid off for GU and back fired on Big State U.

I think it was Othella Harrington, no? I have always considered it to be Iverson as he was often ranked #1 as a junior before the bowling alley incident.

I think it was Othella Harrington, no? Pretty much. Even if AI had played his senior high school season I doubt he would have leaped past the Felipe Lopez hype to be a consensus #1. Reggie Williams Alonzo Mourning Othella Harrington Greg Monroe Consensus #1s. And with Monroe committing this will be the third straight year III has brought in at least one McDAA. I don't know which is more impressive: going into ACC territory and getting a top ten guy like Macklin, a huge ACC fan, away from the clutches of ACC schools like UNC and Wake when you're still establishing your program (recall that III got Macklin's verbal before his second year as coach at Gtown when he hadn't even taken the Hoyas to the NCAA tourney yet) or going deep into SEC country, after a successful Final Four run, and getting not only the #1 recruit but one who had been the main target of Duke for well over a year. I can't think of any other BE coach (not Calhoun, not Pitino and not Boeheim) who can get top level players from southern states away from UNC and Duke when those programs put some effort into reeling those players in.

Problem with big state schools is that they often allow football games to do their recruiting for basketball players.

Reggie Williams Alonzo Mourning Othella Harrington Greg Monroe Consensus #1s. I always thought Patrick was a number one recruit as well?

Now that he is committed I will say this. When I talked with his dad at PJ, he told me who his five would be, albeit Fla and KU were replaced with Texas and UConn. Anyway, he said that Greg grew up loving Duke, but was really interested in Georgetown. He also said that he wanted Greg to go to LSU just because they were the home school, but was honest in saying that it was Greg's decision and that he and his mom would make the final call. I took that as to mean that LSU was only in it and that Greg only visited as a courtesy. Was I allowed to post that admin?

As I've been scouring the message boards for Monroe reaction, among lots of sour grapes, this is the best thing I've read, from the Kansas Scout board:
"Georgetown is such a cool team, school, and area.
John Thompson III is quietly turning them into a national power, again."
That really sums it up.

the LSU board has no reaction cause they've got their hands full with UK right now. Football schools will always be football schools. Welcome to DC young man.

Locker, anyway you or someone else can post some links to these other boards all in one place? I'd be interested to read the boards of some of the BEAST teams - including Syr.; also Md. and anyone else like the ones you've been looking at? I've been on the uconn and duke boards, but it would be nice to see some of these links all in one place. Thank you, or anyone who can help with this. GO HOYAS!!!!

This is on the level of "We Beat Duke." It is great, but I wouldn't go that far. That Duke game is still the jumping off point for what is becoming again a beast of a basketball program.

To an extent, I agree with you, but I think this might be a recruitment jumping off point on the same level. If III does stick around for six more years, I think this signing could be as significant to our long-term success as beating Duke was.
