I bet Brady is really tying one on now. Of course, he didn't tp lose GM to do that, but I digress...

I believe the NBA require either one year after your class has left high school or 19, Kevin Durant turned 19 on September 28 of this year meaning he was 18 when he declared (although the cut off for when you must be 19 may be after the declaration period like you must be 19 by the time the season starts.
but why are we talking Monroe and NBA, he hasnt even played one game of his senior year in High school yet, let alone a college game!

Again, didn't want to be stuck on the block, which is where Duke woulda had him. Playin strictly 5. They need to quit crying. They get who they want, for the most part, so deal with it. A quiet undertone of racism exists in their response and they seem perturbed that GM would want to play for a black coach, which many kids do. Its more of a combination of: Success, Academics, black coach, atmosphere. I think it's a lot easier than that: if you want to be a PG go to Duke. If you want to be a big man go to Georgetown. K doesn't exactly have a mediocre track record wrt developing any non-PG player. I think that development track record spoke volumes.

It's pathetic how Duke papers are bashing their program. That is ridiculous and one player doesn't make a difference. What happens is people believe everything guys like Jerry Meyer write and it sets them up for false hope. If you follow recruiting--you realize nothing is ever a "sure thing" and you also start to notice trends. For instance--we'll look at Greg Monroe's recruitment:
1. He mentioned he grew up a huge Duke fan and was in "awe" of getting to meet Coach K--who he'd seen on television/grew up following.
2. LSU was homestate team and had been recruiting him since he was a FR in HS.
3. When someone is truly a "lock" for a program they don't take long to commit--and Greg never said anything to hint that he was a lock. He kept saying "I'm wide open and want to find the right fit". Well people in Durham/Recruiting analysts were taking the statement above as a hint--when in fact it was a kid being honest/open-but always following it up with "I'm not a lean to anyone--and I'm going to take my time and find the right fit".
4. If you want to make a comparison--look at Greg Monroe and Kendall Marshall's recruitment. Marshall is a self proclaimed UNC lifelong fan--he got an offer from Heels and made his decision. That is a "lock". Monroe stated he was open---he'd had Duke recruiting him for 2 full years and had yet to commit--that means he's NOT a lock.
5. Every hint that Georgetown was a factor was being given after III's visit to Gretna, LA. How many times did Greg mention "Georgetown" initially after asked what schools he liked? How many times did Coach Tyrone Mouzon and Greg's AAU Coach mention how "Georgetown was really coming on and making an impression"? Everyone ignored GU like they had no shot--while those who follow recruiting realize that when a recruit mentions a school repeatedly--and not just to their fanbase's website--they have a serious interest. Does NOT mean they'll commit/sign, but it means you are a factor in their recruitment. Hoyas were blown off and it all leads to.....
The ridiculous response from Duke student paper and fans who are bashing Coach K. No matter how great of a coach you are, you won't get every guy you want or your team needs. For Duke student to be so arrogant to make this about what Duke didn't do in the Monroe recruitment isn't giving the respect to what Georgetown did do-and can do. Duke fans are beyond spoiled and this response showed it. Many of their fans have right mindset and have been classy and defending Coach K/Program AS THEY SHOULD. Recruiting isn't an exact science and you lose more then you win--it's why you need to find the kids who believe in you as a coach/your program. FIT is far more important for coach/player then reputation/success of the program. Greg found a place that fits what he was looking for--and it's not a shot at Duke in any way-as it's not at LSU, UConn, or Texas. They'll all get big time recruits this year and in future and too many times people lament the loss of a recruit instead of focusing on who they DID GET.
Georgetown getting Greg Monroe is great, I'm as excited as can be--but I'm also excited about Henry Sims, Jason Clark, Chris Braswell, and the current kids who put the sweat into making this program a place where top ranked recruits WANT TO BE. Once you reach that level--you will find recruiting a lot easier because your "losses" will be balanced by many more kids being interested and wanting to come to your program. III, his Assistants, the GU Community, and everyone have done their part--now it's time to realize that you have to appreciate the program and not take it for granted or focus on the negative because you never want things to get to the level that we see someone bashing their HOF coach/Elite program for a youngster simply finding another school/coach more to his liking.

It hasn't gone completely unnoticed by LSU, it's just not on rivals: www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/messagetopic.asp?p=5716365There are a few others over the last few days mixed in with the nonstop hand-wringing over football. They contain equally intelligent observations on race, bribery, our academic prowess and how Greg Monroe will undoubtedly see the light and come home to LSU ....just like Duane Spencer.

RDF, I think the Duke student paper article to which you are referring, the Zach Braff one in particular, is a joke article dripping with sardonic wit and sarcasm, among other things.

RDF, exactly right.
I think that the recruiting services and people on message boards built up way too much hype on one comment Monroe made.
As far as I know, Monroe said he had been a Duke fan once. But to hear disgruntled Duke fans now, "he'd tell anyone who asked he was a huge Duke fan." No, Monroe barely talked to anyone about his recruitment. But since there was nothing new to say, gurus kept repeating a two year old quote.
But any Duke fan bashing K is an idiot. Yes, maybe he needs to change his "target one guy" approach a bit, but he's not stupid, he probably will. And maybe he didn't want any other big men in 2008 that were interested.
I think a lot of them were dreaming anyway when they thought that with Monroe they'd be the 2008-2009 title favorite. They have a team of complementary players right now, so they were banking that 100% on Monroe and Singler. And if Singler is that good, why wait til sophomore year? Sure, things can come together, but even the most team team -- us last year -- had at least two upper classmen lottery picks. They might have had one.

RDF, I think the Duke student paper article to which you are referring, the Zach Braff one in particular, is a joke article dripping with sardonic wit and sarcasm, among other things. It's not that article-that I was referring too. If you have read some of the stuff from Duke fans--especially an editorial written by a student who mentioned how Duke needs to "get with the times"--it's pathetic. The key to success in anything is being yourself--and selling yourself to potential recruits, companies, etc....and how phony would it be if Duke had Coach K and his cronies create a MM, and have K doing a polka out there to Lawrence Welk? Kids respond to who someone is and if you come off putting on a personality--they will see right through it. Duke sells itself--just as Georgetown does--they have a great coach, so does GU. Other programs do as well--and key is to be who you are/sell what you are about. As for the LSU board comments--that was a perfect representation of what the SEC fanbases are about. They didn't even know Greg committed, they accused Hoyas of cheating, having a racist coach, and basically admitted that bringing him to the UF-LSU game wasn't best idea. Funny thing is--I saw a clip of Monroe on local ABC affiliate in Louisiana during his visit to LSU--and Les Miles spent time with him---which is normal as most big schools introduce basketball players to FB coach/vice versa, but if anyone has ever heard Les Miles speak more then 3 sentences--that would do more harm then damage.

Kids respond to who someone is and if you come off putting on a personality--they will see right through it. Boy do I wish that were true. If so, Calhoun would never get another recruit in his life.

Other programs do as well--and key is to be who you are/sell what you are about. I don't know, I guess. I haven't seen much of the types of comments to which you are referring because I generally steer clear of those types of sites. I will say that having a premier program 8 miles down the road does ratchet up the intensity and scrutiny level quite a bit, and recruiting misses are amplified because oftentimes the misses end up so nearby and inflict so much damage. Nevermind that the fanbase is dwarfed by that rival's fanbase which makes certain types of misses even more critical. That said, I think there is a lot of room for criticism of Coach K, and it is not purely based on recruiting misses. You are right that Coach K shouldn't put on a song and dance to try and lure recruits if that is not who he is, but simultaneously you have to remember that who he is is farther and farther away from where the typical recruit is, and the few recruits who meet eligibility standards are less likely to respond to the type of person he is and the type of program he runs. To fail to question whether that is relevant in his ability to conduct a portion of his job seems pretty irresponsible to me. And sure, assistants are likely to conduct a significant portion of the recruiting, but if you're a dinosaur and you surround yourselves with likeminded assistants, you're not really building support or balancing your weaknesses with the strengths of your assistants. Personally, I think Coach K is an okay coach who happened to catch lightning in a bottle a few times, but there are plenty of coaches who have. The thing I have a more significant issue with is those, who in defending a program or a coach, begin taking shots at kids like GM, saying things like, "well, I'm glad we didn't get him because he's one and done," or "last I heard the Georgetown basketball team never goes to class."
