Nice find jester... not surprising that Jeff is the most NBA-ready of the rookies. Seattle fans are going to love him and his performance next year will boost our program in the eyes of recruits and parents.

I think that Green is right there near the top, but it would certainly be difficult to put him above Horford in that department. I also think you will hear a lot of noise from Brewer. And as much as I hate to say it, I think Oden will have a fine rookie campaign as well.

Why would you hate to say that? Oden seems like a good guy. I wish him well.

Jeff did an interview with ESPN News today and was funny as hell. He had to answer about 2/3 questions about Kevin Durant and when asked what he's done about living situation being that Seattle might move--he said he's RENTING.
Mike Hill the interviewer, was more interested in showing Jeff he was down ala Stu Scott--but it was still a good job by Jeff of handling himself and representing Seattle and GU well.

Happened to see another little article on Jeff over at realgm.com: realgm.com/src_beyondthearc/95/20070726/the_emerald_green/"Spending a great deal of time with the rookie prospects in the hours before they entered the League, I came away most impressed with Green. Not only did he speak fluently and articulately, but he seemed genuine and comfortable in his words. Oh yeah, and he can play too."

No one is more proud than I that Jeff Green is a Hoya, but what does it say about society when merely speaking "fluently and articulately" is so unusual that it merits comment? On a related subject, Jeff showed his class again yesterday at Kenner by spending quite a while signing autographs for kids.

I would like to think it's more just an athletes vs. non athletes rather than a black vs. white thing. but i'm not so naive to suggest that this is necessarly the case.

I hate to nitpick, but since Jeff is now a professional, shouldn't this thread be on the Pro/College board? By the way, I am halfway kidding, but I don't think you should enforce the rules so selectively, not that it really bothers me though. Since you asked, the "rule" does not apply to Hoya alumni in the NBA. Discussion of them is welcome / appropriate in the Hoyatalk basketball forum.

It speaks to the image/prejudice America has for black athletes and blacks in general. A white person is never praised for speaking proper english even though there are many whites who do not. However, when a black male speaks proper english its as if he is rare and finite being

It speaks to the image/prejudice America has for black athletes Not just athletes. Joe Biden got ripped within the last couple of months for saying something in the same vein about Barack Obama. Wow - I think I just kind-of agreed with mrsixer...

It does really Edited me off when someone says a black is well spoken or articulate.
But at the same time I wonder why more of these teams aren't hiring speaking coaches so these young men don't sound so uneducated.
My uncle played Final Four ball at DePaul and Coach Myers sent my uncle to speak to the press a lot because he was one of the few people on the team that didn't sound stupid the minute he opened his mouth.
No one is expecting these guys to speak prose but people also shouldn't cringe when they hear an athlete attempt to use the English language.

You know I'm not going to lie; when an athlete I like speaks, and speaks well I always take note and that athlete goes up in my opinion. It certainly isn't right to attach race to this view but perhaps since so many of our athlete 'heros' are black the two groups are intermingled. Not saying this is right - just saying I guess I see how it happens. That said, nathanhm brings up a GREAT point. Why don't teams hire speaking coaches? There would be less of a chance of people getting misquoted in the press, and certianly fans would appreciate it when they understood the players. And you would think this would happen at the college AND pro level. How often do you hear players that make NO sense. The newspaper writers end up [fixing] half the quote.
I think thats why when a guy like a Jeff Green or Antonio Daniels or Mark Brunell (and I hate Mark BRunell) speaks well it makes an impression.

Hey, misquotes add some flavor to life. What would the sporting world be without the stylings of Mike Tyson?

One of my favorite moments in sports is the requisite NHL on-ice postgame interview. Those...are...hilarious.
