And none of this appears to bear any relationship to any actual use of a player's NIL in any promotional manner.....and certainly not to any implied market value of such promotional efforts. None of this is good for college athletics, however one may feel about whether players deserve this or not. They're making money off their name, Dickson has a bidding war going on, how is that not showing his market value? NIL is not the issue, the new transfer rules are. I'm starting to believe the rules committee wanted this chaos. It depends on what you mean by "market value." Any bids that Dickinson gets are for his "market value" in the NIL system. In other words, how much money are donors/collectives willing to pay Dickinson to come to their university? But, does that reflect a "market value" in literal name, likeness, image, terms? No. Do I think Dickinson is going to move $1,000,000 of product because of his name, image, and likeness? No. Did Brandon Murray move $300,000-$400,000 value based on his name, image and likeness last year? Very unlikely.

Again, could be inaccurate but... About Akok: during the 20-21 season at UCONN, he was still recovering from his Achilles injury and only played in 7 games, a total of 28 minutes. Might he be eligible for another (second) year of eligibility ? That would require a medical redshirt waiver. It's certainly possible he could receive one.

Stipulating all that... keep pulling the thread. What do you expect these schools to do in response? Wail and gnash their teeth and rend their garments and close up shop? Or will they (attempt to) adapt to changing conditions? DePaul is in better shape than many schools given their endowment and infrastructure. It has added a lot of students over the past 10-15 years and some combination of cost cutting and opening up the admissions valve just a little may be sufficient to stabilize things. DePaul's 70% admissions rate seems foreign to some but compared to Loyola-Chicago, Marquette, Xavier, Creighton, or Butler, it's actually more selective than those five. A good basketball team wouldn't hurt, either, but that's a longer slog and probably not in the cards for the next 2-4 years. Smaller Catholic universities are already feeling the pain. St. Joe's has already merged with two other schools and LaSalle has been facing credit problems. www.fitchratings.com/research/us-public-finance/fitch-revises-outlook-to-negative-on-la-salle-university-pa-revs-affirms-at-bb-13-09-2022While it's a small part of St. John's University, I would note that St. John's is closing their Staten Island, New York campus in spring 2024 because of decreased enrollment. While that campus was small and mostly populated by Staten Islander commuter-type students, it's a clear indication of the headwinds that DFW mentioned facing universities. St. John's official statement said: For perspective, in Fall 2000, the Staten Island St. John's campus had 2,309 undergraduate and graduate students. By Fall 2021, it had 861 undergraduate and graduate students. And the population of the borough has largely been constant during the period (small growth), so that's not a good explanation for this particular decline, as it may be for some of the other schools. This is a topic that could easily fill many other threads elsewhere on here, but I do think a significant part of this is people seeing less value in obtaining college degrees from some institutions. St. John's Staten Island campus charges 33,000 base tuition, and $34,978 for their business school. While this is significantly cheaper than Georgetown, it's extremely expensive considering that St. John's is not the most prestigious place to get a degree (I don't mean this in any way as an elitist comment at all; I have direct knowledge of hiring practices, etc. who treat it this way). Because Georgetown is a prestigious, highly sought after landing spot for high school students, I doubt our alma mater will ever face this issue (at least no time soon), particularly since I think Georgetown could easily add to its applications if it took a more modern approach to admissions. But that's a story for another day. This would be a good off-season topic on one of the other boards.

Correct, but it's the weird world we live in, and to be competitive we need to play the game.

If Georgetown ends up as a top 45 team (which means they would be either an at large or bubble team), then Ed Cooley probably would be a strong contender for coach of the year. It's possible, but not likely given what he inherited. Going from 219 to 45 in one year would be quite an accomplishment.

From TidalBlueHoya on Twitter (not linking to censor language):
"Sources tell me that Ed Cooley told a small group of students outside Chick-Fil-A that “We’re going to be f----- really good next year” and that “there’s a lot more coming” Additionally, every person I’ve talked to who has met him has always been fired up afterwards"

I think it's clear that Ronny has been a net negative since Ewing was hired. But who in the program hasn't been? I just don't think everything that's gone wrong recently can somehow be traced back to Ronny. If you really want to go that route you should probably be tracing it back to the person that put him in the chief of staff role to begin with. The other issue here from the alumni/fan perspective is that without Ronnie being a Thompson, there's no way he would have ever been selected for Chief of Staff. And that might be okay if he had skills, if he was qualified (much like JT3 was when he was hired), etc. But, Ronnie's record, particularly at Ball State, was abysmal. And reports like the one involving Ewing's communications person indicate that he wasn't a good manager either. And you have people who knew him well and interacted with him, like Chris Wright (who generally is extremely supportive of alumni getting jobs with the program), saying he should have nothing to do with the program. To me that says all you need to know, and that doesn't even account for his overseeing part of a program that was horrible the last two years. Ronnie Thompson is an alumnus, and I don't think he should be banned from games or anything like that. That would be silly. He should be welcome at alumni events if he chooses to visit, but he should have the same access other alumni get. He shouldn't get special treatment because of his father, and he certainly shouldn't have any active involvement in the program considering his contribution to its massive decline. I completely agree that Ronnie Thompson wasn't the only problem (Ewing was a much bigger problem as far as coaching went), but he was a significant red flag of a program that was operating and administered poorly.

This can't be serious? We lost out on a non starter recruit because (if you believe the social media likes of an 18 year old) likely wasn't shown the same 💰 love (by choice not cash flow restrictions mind you). If you think that proves recruiting advantage or not then we aren't living in the same reality. I thought Cooley’s excuse for not being more successful at Providence was it was too hard to recruit there - why isn’t Kim English having any problems? What top recruits has Kim English brought into Providence that weren't already on the hook by Cooley? I realize that Dual had decommitted, but he obviously chose Providence for a reason to begin with and I am sure not all the reasons were Cooley alone. On Hopkins, Cooley is the one who recruited Hopkins, and if Hopkins transfers again, he might need to sit again, so I am not sure I'd laud English for that one either. You have always been a critic of Cooley for not being good enough, and now you're lauding English for keeping Cooley's recruits and a George Mason transfer? There may be a case to be made against Cooley on some things, but this is really a blatant attempt to take a shot at him with no basis in facts.

On the prediction, I disagree in part at least, but fair enough. At least on the transfer piece, we will know by November. To be clear, on Pitino*, I did strongly advocate for hiring him, but I never said "we were going to get Pitino." I did say that IF we tried to get him, I thought we'd get him, but we didn't try so that's moot. I know that I stated numerous times that, Georgetown being Georgetown, I did not think it was likely or would happen because DeGioia wasn't open to it. It doesn't really matter anymore anyway, Cooley is our guy now. I am very happy with Cooley so far and I like him more and more as we learn more about him and see his involvement in the community and dedication. I like it. (* one of the reasons I wanted Pitino, other than his coaching ability, was that he was a clean break and I felt we needed one; but Cooley seems to be making a break too and doing things his way, which I was concerned about but no longer concerned about with him bringing in his staff, and Ronnie moving along). Might not know till December or whenever heaths home sick waiver was approved. Which I had forgotten that Heath already transferred twice and this would be his third transfer in three years which is why he isn’t entering the portal. So Heath is pretty much with us for sure next year Heath got the waiver around November 14, 2022.

It’s a prediction. You were convinced that we were going to get Pitino and kept speculating that even though I told you that was not going to happen. The whole point of a message board is to discuss and speculate. Schools are not going to waste NIL money on 2nd time transfers with coaching changes (Murray, spears, etc) if they weren’t sure that they could play immediately. They would not be getting multiple offers from these top schools if there was a likelihood of sitting out a year. It’s common sense that mental waiver due to coaching change will be granted. On the prediction, I disagree in part at least, but fair enough. At least on the transfer piece, we will know by November. To be clear, on Pitino*, I did strongly advocate for hiring him, but I never said "we were going to get Pitino." Hope he gets a waiver if it's TCU. Oh he’ll get a waiver. Schools aren’t going to dish out six figure NiL money to have a player sit out a year professor, with all do respet, you're throwing around a lot of speculation lately: - We have no idea what type of NIL money Spears is going to get. - You are assuming that the NCAA will not enforce the ban on waivers for two-time transfers (to be fair, the NCAA is unreliable, so I get where you are coming from, but I am not sure why the NCAA would annouce the stricter policy if it wasn't going to follow it). - You are assuming Bryce Hopkins is going to transfer to Georgetown even though he has explicitly said he is staying at Providence. Again, I am not necessarily saying you are wrong--you may be right--but you said this definitively when it's really based on a ton of speculation. At best right now, you could say we just don't know.

Yes, I'm surprised that we haven't seen clips of the players who are left going thru drills or have seen interviews of some of them... Not sure where I'm backpedaling or deflecting. My response to Seaweed was to say I didn't make the post because I'm grumpy. It was to show an example of teams doing workouts after the season has ended. At this point, I'm not sure we have enough players left to run any drills. It is a fact that the majority of the team next year are new guys who will transfer to Georgetown in the fall. So until then the majority of basketball being played on campus will be at Yates... True. It is important to realize all of these transfers cannot come to Georgetown until they finish their academic years.

On the talk of the MTE's, keep in mind that they allow you to play more games than you otherwise would be permitted to play under the rules. So, in that sense, you're not really fully "losing" games you otherwise would play domestically or not as part of the MTE's.

Hedging bets on Mediocre Kyle Neptune What's Duleaveys career record? 86-93 at Quinnipiac - 53-59 in conference. Baker Dunleavy's record at Quinnipiac doesn't given an indication that he would be substantially better than Neptune.

I should know better than to take the NCAA at its word, but if they do actually enforce their rules, it may not be as easy as people think. We will see how this all shakes out. Luckily, for now, at least, we aren't relying on anybody on our roster to get a waiver, so luckily it is not a problem for our guys. Waiver for a coaching change is just. I’m not sure anyone would argue otherwise. Certainly not any arbiter. People will use the mental waiver because of coaching change and that will be approved by anyone with any common sense and if not it will be challenged. I agree with you in principle that a waiver for a coaching change is fair. I am just saying the NCAA has explicitly said they won't do it. I tend to agree they'll find waivers around the edges because that is what they do. We will see how serious the NCAA is about it.

I know the portal won't close for about a month, but why are you so sure we will get Hopkins? Had Hopkins said nothing, I would have been open to that possibility, but Hopkins specifically said he is returning under English. Do you have inside information indicating otherwise? Or are you just speculating? Unless you have insider information, I am going to take Hopkins at his word for now. Hopkins would have to sit likely if he transfers. I think that's a main reason why. Up to now, the NCAA has been handing out waivers for second transfers (so players don't need to sit), but the NCAA specifically stated it was NOT going to do this and that coaching changes were not sufficient to get a waiver. Why would Hopkins transfer to sit on the bench for a year? I just don't see it, particularly since Hopkins himself said he was staying in Providence. It’s a Mickey Mouse Ncaa rule. Didn’t deter Chris beard and Brandon Murray. Or bill self going after Primo Spears. I’m going to go with Tom Izzy’s belief that everyone will get Mental waivers over any opinion on here. www.si.com/.amp/college/2023/03/31/tom-izzo-rips-ncaa-immediate-eligibility-waiver-transfer-portalI should know better than to take the NCAA at its word, but if they do actually enforce their rules, it may not be as easy as people think. Isn' t there a period from the day after the championship game until official fall practice where that's illegal? I thought that was why coaching staff don't coach Kenner. exceptions made for teams on a foreign trip, but still with a practice window, Kim English has been playing one on one basketball with the Providence players to try to convince them to stay so I don’t think there is that kind of rule There are definitely rules regarding the amount of time the official coaches can have official practices. As others said, this is partly why the coaches stay away from Kenner. That doesn't mean everyone follows the rules, particularly for "voluntary" workouts, etc., but the rules exist (I don't have time to research this now). I do know that the rules changed a few years ago to allow more pre-season practices, though.
