I tried to post a link from my phone last night but clearly it got lost in the internets. Jeff has quietly produced a string of really nice offensive games since the Memphis newspaper beat writer all but demanded they ship him out of town. Yeah, saying the local Memphis media dislikes Jeff Green is an understatement. He has had about 7 or 8 straight good games including 3 or 4 where he ended up as the leading scorer. The coaching staff made an interesting change in his usage that correlated to production uptick. They started using him as an initiator of the offense. Not necessarily a point forward but a primary ball handler, even with Chalmers or Conley in the game with him. I wonder what the local media is saying about his current uptick in production. The other recent positive is that he has recently developed a one handed floater that he shoots from 8-12 feet. This stops him from charging which has been a recurring problem against good defensive teams.

5. This game is a must and Providence is a good team, hopefully posters will not use this side story as an excusable distraction for a loss if Providence wins. Are we allowed to use it as an excuse if we win?

Another problem with RPI - and Pomeroy for that matter - ss that teams are really close to each other this year and actual differences between 30 and 40 or 30 and 50 are much closer than they have been in other years. Loo, for example at the number of losses in the top 10.
The impact of the parity is such that you can move up or down 25 spots with a medium sized upset.

I am surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but both Greg and Jeff both led their teams with 21 points last night as The Grizzlies beat the Bucks by 20.

I have always been an immense fan of your work, but this piece seems to connect at a visceral level.

I initially thought that we might have got the benefit of swallowed whistles in the last two minutes, but in reviewing the video I don't think that is true. Both of the steals - LJ's against the sideline and Kaleb's at half court were clean and the rest of the contact - by both teams - resulted in fouls. True, but had those two minute been called like the previous 38, you would expect to hear whistles on both occasions. If the expectation was for more bad calls, then your assessment is correct.

Fair point. My overarching point, however, is these guys play best when playing ball a bit more instinctively. Also when the refs swallow the whistle... We are not in sole possession of second place. Both we and Xavier have 6-2 conference records although we currently have the tiebreaker by virtue of our win against them. ? Doesn't the head to head victory tiebreaker mean as of today we are in sole possession of 2nd place. If the regular season was to end today we would be in 2nd place. No. it means that if the BET was held today that we would be the #2 seed. We were in sole possession of second place for a couple hours until Xavier tied our conference record.

You may be called upon to leave future games at key moments where victory seems just out of reach. Can we set up some sort of bat signal that lets you know when you have to take one for the team and miss witnessing a glorious comeback? Do I get partial credit for putting the game on pause, turning my phone off, and allowing my learners permitted 16 year old to drive herself (and me in the death seat) to hockey practice when JTIII was being restrained after Govan's 5th foul then watching the resurrection on delay? Simply put, NO.

I took the opportunity to rewatch the game and took copious notes. My conclusions: If anything, the refereeing was worse than I thought. Upon careful review, Georgetown had at least 19 calls (fouls called/not called and other violations called/not called) go against it, while, generously, Creighton had room for maybe four complaints. Moreover, two of Creighton’s potential complaints – both taking place in the final two minutes – have mitigating circumstances. Interestingly, 10 of the questionable calls from a Hoya standpoint took place in the first half, but none of those calls was ridiculous. While watching in real time, I had the sense in the first half that we weren’t getting a lot of calls but that the calls or non-calls were not egregious.
The second half was a different story. There were very clearly 7 ridiculous calls that went against the Hoyas. In order: -Zierden, caught well under the basket while a Xavier shot is in the air, launches himself out of bounds and is rewarded with a foul on a Hoya. -DSR is called for an offensive foul with his arm maybe 3 inches from his body. Against this standard, Grayson Allen would have fouled out in the first five minutes of our game against Duke. -Groselle clears out the Hoya defender under the basket with 6 feet of moving screen, allowing an amazingly open layup – no call. -Jesse is called for a moving pick because, apparently, Watson is small. -Jesse’s fifth foul, about which nothing more needs to be said. -LJ’s box out of Cole “contort your body like you’ve been shot” Huff. -Trey Mourning is called for a moving screen – minus the movement – complete with another Zierden flop.
One can only imagine how frustrated Jessie must have felt. He fouled out in 10 minutes of playing time and should have reasonably expected to have had only one or two fouls based on his play.
In watching the game in real time, I thought that the refs had maybe put away their whistles during the comeback. After further review I don’t think that I was initially correct. First, both LJ’s and Kaleb’s steals were clean. And Marcus’s block of the last shot was clearly not a foul. That leaves two calls with which Creighton might take issue. -The out of bounds call on DSR’s free throw miss. Initially I thought that it went out on us and that we had caught a break. In rewatching it 5 or 6 times it would appear to have been a true 50/50 ball. -The final foul call on Watson. There was very clearly a foul on the play, but that foul was committed before Watson touched DSR. Obviously it helped us that Watson was not on the floor for the final 6 seconds. Other observations. Xavier went 4 for 21 for three. Of their 17 misses, I only count 7as being open 3s. We went 6 for 21 with 10 open misses.
I can’t remember when I have ever seen a team so happy – and so happy with each other – after a mid-season win.
Our second half team defense on Watson was quite good. Yes he got to the rim a few times but we turned him over a bunch.

Jeff with 30 tonight including 4 points in the last 12 seconds to take the game to overtime, plus a bunch of rebounds and the best defense I have seen him play since he came into the league. He also had a couple highlight reel throw downs, of which I fully expect Dan to post clips.

There are some people notably absent from this thread. Any guesses as to why? This game sent them into shock. I'm not one of "those people" and the game put me into shock.

Mack has JTIII's number. This is gonna be ugly, especially considering X is the best its been since entering the conference and G is arguably the worst its been. I expect 15-20 pt loss and 15 turnovers. An ugly loss to Nova notwithstanding, this team has shown very little to give its fanbase confidence that they will put up a fight against an aggressive, punch you in the mouth team like Xavier Idiot. Nominee for post of the year

I too am all in, but it would appear that his offense is way, way, way ahead of his defense.
