Sources during coaching searches are almost always unreliable. Don't believe them. Now he tells us.

I've got a good source (not affiliated with GU) that says that there is some degree of mutual interest with Mike White of Florida. Holy smokes!

If Georgetown were to de emphasize basketball; a decision which, arguably, could have merit,,they would be honor bound to drop out of the Big East. While they're at it they could drop football. I feel my agita subsiding already.

Regardless of who the new coach is one hopes the administration will be more circumspect with respect to contract terms.

I listened to the interview and liked what I heard. He is clearly a hoops junkie and displayed familiarity with other teams' players, tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. He is refreshingly candid and wears his heart on his sleeve. Over time that, no doubt, would prove a mixed blessing but "in the same token", as Big John would say, that brings some sorely needed fire. Is he rough around the edges? Yes. Does he fail the coachspeak stammer test? Yes. But if the search committee says he is the guy I'm on board. And I can't say that about all the names we've heard.

I know it's getting late to be demanding but would looking for someone who does not employ the coachspeak stammer be asking too much?

We're going to end up hiring Ewing. The Thompson influence isn't dead, and they really didn't want to get rid of III in the first place. Hiring Ewing placates the Thompsons, former players, and a growing portion of the fanbase.
I like Manning too, but if we hired him, they would get all kinds of backlash about not hiring Ewing.
I think they settle and hire Ewing, and it could very well turn out good. And if it doesn't?

If this year's search was left too late to get the right replacement then just go interim. Next year is a write off under anyone. It is critical to get the right hire. It must be nailed. Settling for an Amaker because choices preferable to him did not work out would be a monumental mistake.

I was thinking the exact same thing... what fans? At the moment it seems like the easiest/most natural group of fans that you could immediately put into seats at the Verizon Center are students and alums. It just so happens that students and alums are any program's target for donations/giving to the university and athletics programs, so I think that's likely the first group of fans the search committee is looking to satsify. It would be a bonus to have an African-American coach who could maintain a grasp on any remaining fans who have historically rooted for Georgetown basketball for its identity and history of inclusiveness, but it would be crazy to think that Georgetown has the national appeal (especially to younger people) that it did throughout the 80s and early 90s Any national appeal Georgetown may want to have in the futures is completed tied to its past. People don't care about reading stories about Georgetown the white catholic school from DC. People do care about reading stories about Georgetown and its tradition of giving black basketball players from inner cities a chance at an education. Guess what writers like writing stories about? Things people care about reading. The coach doesn't need to be one race over the other, but he does need to embrace the ethos of his predecessors. You have anointed yourself spokesman for "people". It might be better to just speak for yourself.

The 80's is a little bit extreme. If fans can get the 2005/2006 season every 3 to 4 years that will keep everyone happy. And to avoid the "hot seat" you don't even have to do that, just make the NCAA's at a minimum every 2 out 4 years; And you dont even have to win a game Very few schools with a National Championship and 4 Final Four appearances will have less pressure on its head coach So, pretty much what III did except the last 2 years. Fans are okay with this? Not this fan. We should be in a 68 team Tournament 8 out of 10 years. (But if we were to win it once or twice allowances, I'm sure, could be made).

Who says JT Jr. would be looking over his shoulder? To my knowledge he hasn't made any public comment about III's departure so what exactly is his relationship with Georgetown and the basketball program at this moment? I have no idea and wonder if anyone really does. OK, let's say JT Jr abandons the school, I still believe Hurley will be more effectively kept in line by the Georgetown admin versus URI. As I wrote, Hurley likely feels and I think he is a big fish in a small pond at URI. He can get away with acting ridiculous sometimes, because what is URI really going to do about it? I do not think that is the case at GU and Hurley knows it. People are who they are.

Probably nothing, but there was a private jet flight from South Bend to Morristown, NJ today...would think Tagliabue might be running the search from NYC area. I would think it is more likely that this is something than not. This is exactly the kind of hard hitting research we need. Did you get the N number?
