The biggest thing on defense is bodies and development. Our best defenders last year were Agau and Hayes. Part of that is skill/physical size but part of it is your back-up post guys can be more aggressive on defense because if they foul out who cares? That also helps the starters. We will probably pull another big for depth, but expect at a minimum Walker to hit the weight room and join Leblanc and Mourning in an actual frontcourt rotation. And yes, we will foul more next year but I expect we will also get more stops and press more.
For the guards, it's pretty obvious Blair and Pickett need to get stronger and work on their defense. Pickett improved throughout the season more than Blair, but he should. His length is an obstacle even at this early stage.
Kaleb and Jagan...a lot of work to do. Have to be either a plus defender or a plus offensive player otherwise it will be a lot easier to get lost. They're hard workers so would love to see the competition push them to better things.
Big offseason.

Same and I'm not sure everyone realizes how bad this could have been.
We were 15-18, 5-13 and the day Pat was hired had lost in the previous few months;
Pryor,Hayes,Cameron: Graduation Agau, Copeland: Transfer Campbell: injury Waters: Decommitted Peak: NBA
We had signed;
Walker
Really could have been way worse which admittedly is hard to believe but we managed to pick up some nice recruits and tread water at least in a tough conference. Brutal, but reasons for optimism.

Trey Dickerson career Hoya stats: 41% FG% 26% 3PT% 54% FT% Ouch. He had 4 or 5 good games toward the end of the season, but really struggled for the rest. He's SD State's back-up guard. He's not struggling. He's just not good. Jagan and Mulmore were the only guards on this roster in April. Dickerson didn't work out but imagine if Ewing doesn't land Pickett and Blair. Actually don't imagine that. Just watch Pitt play.

This is the worst defensive team in the history of Georgetown basketball. This teams KenPom defensive efficiency numbers went from 58 last year to 110 this year (the lowest rating since KenPom rankkngs started)— and Rodney Pryor and LJ Peak would not be confused with Gene Smith and Jabril Trawick. The Ewing era is off to a disastrous start. A completely overhaul of the defensive philosophy is needed with a close look at the assistant coaching staff Would they be confused with Mulmore and Dickerson?

I know this is not news, but our guards are awful. So much playing time available next year... I'm not counting on a big jump from Jagan and Kaleb nor should Pat... if it happens, then cherry on top... At least the low major Dickermore show is mercifully almost over. Nothing against them either. They're working out there, just not good.

Jessie's defense, or lack thereof, likely hurt his chances for conference honors. I still think that Jessie in particular, and Doc to a lesser extent, were specifically coached to try to avoid fouling because of the void to replace them. That necessarily hinders your defense. Completely agree and this will be a hidden benefit of a full team next year (LeBlanc especially).

While he is no Markel, Mosely was the only guard who understood how and where to be to break a press. He needs a 3 point shot he can shoot consistently above 35% and a willingness to take the shot 4 times per game and all his other skills would be multiplied as players would have to change how they guard him! I think what we're all saying is PG is up for grabs. It will all come down to who closes the gaps in their skill set over the summer. Good to have competition.

Blair's value, and the reason he is on the all-freshman team is his aggressiveness drew fouls. So much so, that he shot around 30% from two and still had 100+ offensive rating in conference. Blair has hit 60 FTs this season and it's not over. Reggie Cameron hit 53 in his career. Totally different players, skill sets, and value to the team. Blair earned every bit of that honor and I hope he continues to improve. He's really surprised me. Not to quibble over Jahvon, I agree that he has great potential. But he actually shot almost 35% from two, not 30. And he shot fewer free throw per game than Kaleb it Mulmore. I realize he has more aggressiveness, but don't think he is on the all-freshman team because he shot 2.4 free throws a game. 30.9% in conference play from 2. 3.2 FTs per game in conference (3rd on the team). Kaleb and Mulmore feasted on the OOC. Blair kept pounding and upped his game as the competition improved. He didn't shoot all that well but got 28% of his points at the line (best on the team). If there was a crack, he'd take it for better or worse. That craftiness got him 10ppg. Apologies for using conference stats. I just didn't want to see another hs2003 post that begins with "But the OOC schedule inflated..."

Sad that none of our current guards have a step back three in their tool kit. It seemed like Nova had multiple guards that had all the tools. At times it looked like we sent out the JV squad and the varsity gave us Govan to even the teams a bit. They will next year. Pretty sure Pat will tell them to develop a pull up and step back or sit.

I think the comparison is based solely on the fact that pretty much the only contribution either could make was hitting some perimeter shots. Blair of course has much more time to develop other aspects of his game. Just wanted to update this with the ALL BE and Freshman rankings. I would say rankings still proved to be pretty good indicators. The biggest outliers are our own Blair who was definitely under ranked but is all freshman more because of opportunity and not actual play. As for the all BE teams Khyri Thomas is the biggest outlier. He did a year of prep which kind of screws with things but I'm sure he is the one the "rankings don't matter" portion of the board will point too. The two honorable mentions are also outliers but Rowsey is 23.5 years old so that plays a huge part. 1st teams Kelan Martin SR. 140 Shamorie Ponds SO. 45 Jalen Brunson JR. 22 Marcus Foster RS SR. 178 Mikal Bridges RS JR 81 Trevon Bluiett SR. 39 2nd team Khyri Thomas JR. 326 Markus Howard SO. 68 Marcus Derrickson JR. 80 Angel Delgado SR. 47 HM Andrew Rowsey RS. SR. NR Kyron Cartwright SR. 270 1st year team Naji Marshall 58 Mitch Ballock 94 Omari Spellman 20 Nate Watson 100 Jamorko Pickett 76 Jahvon Blair 238 Agree the rankings are pretty good but I think you're reaching on qualifying the outliers. Trevon Blueitt and Andrew Rowsey are 5 months apart in age. Jahvon Blair got opportunity, sure, but he also had to do way more than Mitch Ballock for example and did it just about as well in volume. Bottom line, high ranking recruits are more likely to be good players. That's unquestionable. But this is pretty consistent that around a third of these teams are experienced players outside the top 100. That's pretty much as expected. Nobody can project every player at 22-23 from 18 especially when the difference between #50 and #250 is noticeable but really small.

We win the 3 conference OT games we lost, squeeze out another win, and play a stronger OOC schedule and we are right in the conversation. If Doc and Jessie stay, and the new guys can contribute - especially on defense - yeah, Selection Sunday might matter to us. At one level this makes perfect sense,and I try hard convincing myself that we are really not that far away. If we only had a scoring pg or just a bit more depth in the front court this is a 10-8 team today. Then reality hits looking forward to 2018 with a returning back court of Mosely and Blair.Some very unproven front court recruits in Carter and LeBlanc which may help a little and what many here think is the savior at guard in McClung whom every time I've see him play on video against real AAU competition it's like why is anyone getting excited. Then of course it's Johnson will improve I'm still waiting for that to happen this year. Who knows what we have in Mourning if he had a different or was at another big time school he would have been recruited over and the message sent a while ago its time to look at other schools. I hope I'm wrong but at this point just another warm body. The bright light is Jamarko needs to drastically improve his handle, strength, first step,hand overall quickness and please move him from a 2g to a real wing or 3 he can be very special. Going forward as of today 9-9 in BE nrxt year is a real reach and we are much closer to this years 5-13. If they can find another guard or 2 that are significant upgrades on both sides of the ball than Mulmore and Dickerson this spring and McClung can have some immediate impact then who knows I'll reserve judgement until November. With 6 scholarships available over the next 2 years how those are used will determine both short and long term future of the program Patrick has a very small room for error and can afford very few mistakes. I think you're underselling how terrible this year's roster is. LeBlanc, Carter, and Mourning in the frontcourt have a wide range of outcomes but no matter, they are literally replacing nobody. A fifth year senior, a 3-star, and a 4-star recruit are purely additive. That's how bad this roster is. The only people who will need to replace anyone are Mac and whomever else we get at point. They replace two low major reserve level talents. Again, wide range of outcomes but really hard to fall lower than the Dickermore well. This year's team isn't close. But next year's might be. It's a completely different situation.

I think that Mosley is a very athletic kid without a natural position. He has a weak handle, poor outside shot and is too undersized to play inside. Have not given up on him yet but today was another very tough game—3 rebounds, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 0 points. That won’t cut it for someone who started. 23 minutes, 0-1 and you know our leading scorer is out. That's the most discouraging part. That's not a physical error, but one of mindset. "If I don't do anything, I don't do anything wrong" is what we saw far too often the last few years. That's not going to fly going forward. Of all the returning players, Jagan is probably most at risk of falling off the depth chart. He's a smart kid so maybe he can figure out his role and what he needs to work on to get minutes, but right now if he's a SG, Blair and Pickett have passed him and if he's a PG, he will be hard-pressed to beat out the newcomers (yes I assume there will be more than one).

Last year I thought Jesse needed better footwork. I didnt notice the same thing this year. As good as he has been, I have to think he has another level to reach. Marshall mentioned this on the broadcast about him "having another level" and I agree. It still comes down to effort with Jessie. When he's engaged and on, he's really good. But he still becomes indifferent on the defensive end too often. Perfect example when he didn't even attempt to block Paschal's shot that one possession when he was in great position to do so. Hopeful that Patrick can get that little more out of him this offseason for next year I think today he had to back off. Agree that often he doesn't contest enough but today you could tell he had to avoid contact because he absolutely could not get in foul trouble. Big focus for Jessie will also be lower body strength and post moves. Of course, feeling the double team is on everyone's to do this summer. But from a fitness, rebounding, and jump shooting perspective he has come a long way. So optimistic he will improve.

Gotta say. Patrick knows his stuff. Yeah I mean the ultimate underdog today and they continue to fight. Villanova's shooting from three though. Guarded, unguarded, off the pass, the dribble, NBA, guard, forward, center...I mean it's really something to watch.

Could be a preview of even an uglier 2nd half. This game was a mismatch with a healthy M. Derrickson. Without him,Jesse is on the floor by himself with a collection of players that are either too young, too undisciplined, or simply not talented enough to be playing basketball in the Big East. That is not meant to be mean or condescending. This team can play as hard as they want, it won't make a difference against an opponent like Villanova. The disparity in basketball talent between these two teams is overwhelming. I'm at the game. It hurts that MD is our best player, but might hurt more that he's our only PF on the roster. Have to give them credit, they came out with a plan and at least got out early. But now, not sure what the options really are. Dickerson, Blair, Pickett, Walker, Govan and see what happens?

First, I would hope everyone is thinking tournament next year. Full roster, return our top 7, entire off-season to prepare...we're not that far off. This is a critical off-season as we get to see how the team develops under the new staff.
Which brings me to point #2 which is, we don't need "the guy". We need "the development" of "the team". Jeff Green kind of made us fall into this trap of thinking one player would bring us back to the Final Four. But Monroe was the guy, Freeman was the guy, Wright was the guy, Otto was the guy, and our latest "the guy who got away and shall not be named" is 12th in the 14-team SEC.
We don't need a guy, we need a team. Really want to see how each player develops individually this off-season. There's plenty of homework to do but also a lot of upside.

No it doesn't. No grad transfers, please. 4-years or Mitchell for an additional guard. We're not in a "Mulmore/Mosley and it's April" situation this year. I think we can safely look elsewhere. We have a need but we're not desperate. Understand this view if there is still a quality game-ready pg in the Class of 18 pg to be had. Otherwise if you can get a quality graduate transfer pg with a handle and some shooting skills to come in and hold the fort for a year, do it. Perhaps Dickerson did not pan out as hoped, but lots of these kids come in and make a difference, particularly for a team that still lacks a quality pg and decent shooting guard. Hate to rely upon improved ball-handling and shooting from Mosley, Kaleb and Blair (who has shown some real promise but is still developing) or put all the eggs in the McClung basket. All I'm saying is there is like 2-3 actually good grad transfers a year. Maybe 7-8 JUCOs. Sure get someone if we can but this is a really small pond and there's no reason to stretch. Put it this way; if we don't want Sherwyn Devonish now, why do we want him after three years at Norfolk St.? I'd argue if you're taking a flyer, better to be on a 4-year player you might be able to mold and develop.

Thread to discuss ‘18 grad transfers eligible to play right away. Casual just tweeted about Mike Cunningham from USC-Upstate, RS Jr. Averaged 13 pts and 3 assists. 38% from 3, but also 38% from the field. Local kid from Maryland. Does averaging 13 pts at USC-Upstate transnslate to the BE!!!’ No it doesn't. No grad transfers, please. 4-years or Mitchell for an additional guard. Just watching those highlights, we have no one on the current Hoya roster who can do what he does. The closest thing to McClung we saw all year was Dickerson’s performance against Butler. If we get 12-14 points and 5 assts from McClung next year, we are a different team. A more efficient 8 and 5 will do it. I still think it is almost impossible to overstate how sub-par Dickermore is. Conference turnover percentages of 38.4 and 27.8. That's insane. Our supposed ball handlers are turning it over at rates that make Mikael Hopkins shake his head. Mulmore has 15 baskets in 16 games. The list goes on and on. Add to that our return of the top 7 players, a full (and not yet complete) recruiting class, which means Mac won't have to be superman and he's in a good spot to succeed even with the inevitable growing pains.
