I came across a similar thread on the Rutgers board. They were comparing Rudy Gay and their super frosh, Ollie Bailey. Of course they picked Bailey to be the Big East freshman of the year.
So I thought I'd put it to a vote on here -- who will be the best BE frosh? I can't really think of any other players, so there's not a lot of names to chose from. This post is really just an excuse to throw out this stat comparison. I stole it from the Rutgers board and added JefF Green's stats, as well as stats per/40 minutes.
Gay: 23.0min/g 9.50pts 7.00reb 1.3ast 2.0TO FG-36% 3PT-50% (2-4) FT-71 40.0min/g 16.5pts 12.1reb 2.7ast 3.5TO
Bailey: 27.3min/g 13.5pts 5.8reb 0.3ast 1.8TO FG-60% 3PT-0%(0-1) FT-72 40.0min/g 19.7pts 8.4reb 0.4ast 2.6TO
Green: 35.2min/g 11.3pts 8.3reb 4.0ast 2.0TO FG-47% 3PT-38%(3-8) FT-57 40.0min/g 12.8pts 9.4reb 4.5ast 2.3TO
It's only 4 or 5 games, but interesing nonetheless.

Who will be? Gay.
Who should it be? That's a whole 'nother question.

Nice poll, interesting to see the stats from both actual minutes and 40 mpg viewpoints. However, one key area that adds to Green's case are blocks. He's averaging over 2 a game. It is still way to early to start having a serious debate about this topic, but two key things will play into the Gay/Green race, if it ends up being between them two, let alone the other candidates.
The first is that Gay has the obvious advantage of not only being a pre-season All-Rookie member nationwide, with more publicity, but he plays for UConn, and was a top recruit coming in, so more people are watching him.
The other is the success of the team he's on. Obviously, we don't yet know whether Georgetown will surprise and have a shot at winning over half of their Big East games, but assuming that we show moderate improvement over last season, we're looking at a team still in the lower half of the Big East. On the other hand, while we don't know how good UConn will be, we do know that they're probably in the top 25 all year, have almost all their games televised, etc.
Not only will Gay be helped by the media and his name recognition, but the argument will go that he contributed to a winning team, regardless of inferior stats, if that is indeed the case.
I would say that a combination of superior stats for Green, combined with the Hoyas overachieving as a team, will be necessary for him to earn the award.
GO HOYAS!!! BEAT ILLINOIS!

My "other" is Jonathan Wallace who seems to be a real steadying influence on the entire team.

This is going to depend on how the hoyas play overall to some extent. The odds on favorite has to be Gay but I am pulling for Jeff as I think he will creep up on some people.

First of all why was McIver chosen?
Second of all why wasn't John Wallace?
Anyway here are a couple of comments from UConn fans (on the Boneyward board) concerning Rudy gay after he went 3 for 15 in a recent game against a sucky team.
rudy played careless in this game
he had a couple of poor shot selections on 3s aterrible crosscourt pass and missed believe it or not 5 dunk attempts and another 5 point blank shots. he ended up 3-15 and that is pretty bad considering most of the shots were within 2 feet. I remember ray allen very well when he was a freshmen--he was much more fluid in almost every phase. rudy will be a superstar No doubt about it, reminds me of sean marion, but he could use 2 years here to work on his body strength and basketball fundamentals.
Rudy has a tough time getting his shot off
He couldn't beat anyone on Indiana 1x1 and today just did not know how to use his body to finish around the basket. It will come
Rudy Gay's play???
I thought he was out to lunch. There were times when I thought Calhoun should have pulled him for poor shot selection and let him get away with things he usually does not let the others do. I realize that he has pro talent, but so do many of the other players. They all manage to know their roles. Will Gay have trouble accepting the fact that he is not the only star on this team? Will he be an unselfish team contributor or role player when necessary?
This is not to say that most fans are unhappy with Gay's play. Most thinks he is living up to all of the high expectations.

I guess Rutger's Bailey took home the Dec. 20th BE Rookie of the Week award, but perhaps Green can shoot for BE Player of the Week soon!
