Ok, so I understand that we have a contract with College Sports, and that already Lacrosse, Football and even soccer (perhaps other sports) have live audio, some times video, and stats available. I also understand that the deal with our website is signed, but not yet implemented.
But I'm curious why there is still no ability to get live stats (other than from Yahoo, ESPN, etc.) Check out today's schedule from College Sports:
www.collegesports.com/media/today.html
There is live audio (which there is no reason to pay for when there are other options, but we don't need to go there now), but no live stats. Does any subscribe to this service, and can they tell us tonight whether if you sign in for audio, there is also an up-to-date play by play stat tracker aswell.
Some may think that the stat tracker is a moot point, but it is valuable for many reasons. First, the one provided by Davidson for the last game, had the most up-to-date and accurate info, often way ahead of Yahoo, not to mention that sometimes Yahoo and ESPN's stats go whacky and they list incorrect time, score, etc. Also, this is useful for those who cannot get the java chat, or streaming audio, due to firewalls, other technical constraints, etc.
Furthermore, I would almost rather pay a monthly fee of $6.95 to someone like College Sports if there was a consistenly branded and reliable audio stream (with the potential for video at some point in the future), with high bandwidth, live stats, video recaps, and other amenities. What are your thoughts?
It's kinda disappointing that two years ago, through a deal between the NCAA, CBS and Yahoo, you could watch a real-time streaming video feed for any entire game online, for a decent price, but for some reason they pulled this to only audio last year. Was this due to pressure by CBS that TV ratings would go down? In this day and age, with countless digital channels, etc., it's annoying that many of us still have to deal with CBS chosing to move away from one game during the Tournament, when if ESPN/ABC, or other networks had bought the rights, they would more than likely broadcast every game in its entirety through their affiliaties and cable networks.
Well, sorry to bemoan these points, but it would be great if Georgetown Athletics and the Sports Information deparment provided us with useable information about our various relationships with respect to media and online coverage and partnerships, such as with College Sports, local Radio, TV, etc., rather than having to rely upon informal, word-of-mouth (and the great info provided by DFW HOYA's site).
You would think that a program who has enough trouble as it is attracting fans and alumni to games would do everything in their power to get fans interested, rather than making it so that only the die-hards, such as those of us on this board, figure out how to follow the team.
Well, I would love to hear thoughts, comments and any insight anyone could provide. In the mean time, I look forward to joining many of you on-line to follow tonights game.
GO HOYAS!!! BEAT PSU!
