Next week will indeed be a big one.
Hopefully we can lay an ACC-like beating on the Big 10.
Actually, I'd settle for improvement of our guys, working hard, and going 1-1 on the week.

From ESPN's Andy Katz:
The Illini's schedule won't allow them to lose too often, if at all, until they go to Michigan State on Feb. 1 -- the only meeting between the two teams this season.
Illinois coach Bruce Weber will talk about potential trap games against Arkansas in Little Rock Saturday, at Georgetown next Thursday, against Oregon in Chicago on Dec. 11 and, maybe, Cincinnati in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. But the reality is that if the Illini play at the speed and precision like they did Wednesday night -- shooting 60 percent in the first half, 51.5 percent overall and a season-high 27 assists on 38 field goals -- then this team isn't going to be slipping from the top of the polls anytime soon.

Amazing. You mean if an incredibly talented team shoots 60%, they'll win all their games versus mediocre competition?
Andy's really reaching there, huh?

What are the chances ESPN mentions that Illini have to face two Thompsons in one week?

As has been previously mentioned on the board, Johnson appears to be the stud for Penn St. I can't say i really remember him from last year's game (i think he was mostly working under the boards). Of course I was distracted by Jagla their Dirk (Diggler) Nowitzski look-alike who killed us. Their starting guards appear to be the same little guys who played last yr (both pg & sg barely 5'11). Should be a good matchup for our small guards unlike Temple.
From looking at their box scores it looks like they have a frosh big guy who they are relying on to play big mins and put up some pts (Jeff Green matchup). First couple guys off the bench are frosh and sophs so they are young like us.
Hopefully we won't need a questionable foul call from Tim Higgins and two free throws from ashanti to win this year (although for anybody else who was up there it was exciting).

I was there, and it sure was exciting, but i'd call the foul more "boneheaded", a la Sam Jefferson -- one of those "what the hell is he doing THAT for?" kind of things. I've seen that play not called a foul before, but it should be, 100% of the time.

PSU has a transfer SF that played well last night. More of a Bowman-body type, I think, he took apart Ricky Shields, which is the danger of that three-guard set.
Johnson didn't play against us last year.
One of the PSU starting guards was a returnee, but he got hurt. The two that played the most time were not there last year. PSU has their starting point off the team for personal reasons.

The thing is, its almost impossible for a team to play at that level for an entire season. We have to hope that they cool down and that we play the best possible game we have in us. We have to slow it down and use the whole shot clock and then nail shots somewhat like against Davidson. It has to be low scoring and we have to control the tempo, kind of like what Carmody and Northwestern did last night in a 44-48 losing effort to UVa.
