I have an idea: I'd love to have some type of large game watch where we can get more than, say, 50-100 people in a bar for the game. There are 38,000 DC-area alums and I think we are underutilizing the opportunity to all be together to watch for those that can't make it to Atlanta. These are the types of events where, say, CBS would show us on TV as the 'GU contingent watching from home' as they often do for sporting events.
Opening the Verizon Center would be a logistical nightmare.
I remember various times as a student, they had a large projection screen play videos on Copley Lawn. Copley Lawn could hold a few hundred/thousand; get a few cops and the video screen and we're in business.
Does anyone think this sounds good? Is there anything we could do to help it happen (massive email campaign to Hoya Hoops/GU Alumni Relations)?

How about opening up McDonough and having a big projection on the wall across from the doors? I bet you could get 4K in there with seating on the floor.

The last game I saw in McDonough on a large screen with a couple thousand Hoya fans was the '85 championship. Never again.

Never again. *bump* they are planning a big game watch in mcdonough. sounded like it would be fun to me, but if there are reasons people have from past experience to avoid it, please pass them along.

Just out of curiosity, JE_III, why never again? Surely you realize what happened in 1985?

I'm on the board of the DC alumni club, so here's a couple thoughts from that perspective. We work very closely with the alumni association/alumni relations staff to make decisions. Also, we typically leave all things basketball-related to the Hoya Hoop Club so we're not duplicating efforts. The exception to this is the NCAAs tournament because there are so many alumni watching who aren't part of the HHC, among other reasons. Last year at this time, some people complained about what we did, and I asked them to help us out, which a couple people have. Anyone here is welcome to email me to get involved.
About this weekend:
1) There will be an on campus event (probably at McDonough) but, being that there are 6,000 students already on campus, they are not marketing it to alumni. It is NOT that they don't want alumni there, it's just as you pointed out that there are almost 40,000 alumni in town and McDonough cannot sustain even 10%, maybe not even 1% of that population when you factor in the students.
2) From the club perspective, we try to locate venues where we can have a Georgetown-only, or Georgetown-dominated crowd. Given the number of people in the area from all over the country with various school affiliations, it's tough to find that kind of place. Plus, your run of the mill sports bar already draws a hefty clientele, so it's not easy to convince them to give up space for us. It is even harder no matter what to find a venue that can take in over 100-150 people without making it a zoo. The solution we've found so far has been SoBe in Arlington, which is a private venue. It's not ideal, but it seems to work okay overall.
3) For our parties, the email goes out to area alumni, and despite the huge number overall, we usually don't garner more than about 100-150 at one location. That may be because of the locations we choose, but it also seems that a lot of people just like to watch the game at home or at a place close to them with friends. Given our experience, it doesn't necessarily make sense to rent out a cavernous space (with limited budgets we have), although i don't think we're opposed to it either.
FYI, regarding the media, I send a press release out to all local media announcing our game watches for the NCAA. Last year, 2 TV stations came to the one in Arlington. Not sure about last weekend, since I was actually in NY, but NBC did call me. They seem to prefer to go to campus, which is fine, to do what you suggested. But they're willing to come to ours too and they definitely know where it is from the release.
I do not know what happened in 1985.

Hoya, thanks for your comments (and time spent with the DC Club). I work in Georgetown Advancement, albeit in a more development role, and know that the Club's efforts are greatly appreciated.
As for me, plans and priorities change - I'll be off to Atlanta in less than 48 hours!

FSOHoya and Hoya (and by the way it's amazing no one ever thought to register that name before you):
Hard to tell if you are guys are artificially in denial and I just don't get the joke, but JE_III is not talking about the poor technology that existed in 1985 nor the limited viewing angles that McDonough presents. Think of what might have happened in the actual game in 1985...and if you aren't aware, the rest of this site is a wonderful resource for Georgetown history.

I'm on the board of the DC alumni club, so here's a couple thoughts from that perspective. I do not know what happened in 1985. Heh. Better leave that one alone. My two cents- if you live in metropolitan Washingland, you don't need to depend on "organized" events. Go with some fellow Hoya fans to any place on M St, on Wisconsin Avenue, near the Waterfront, or whatever else floats your boat. Get there early, way before tipoff, or you'll find the place packed with the enemy. Buy some adult beverages or other cold refreshments. Meet some new fans. Show all the local haters how Hoyas win with class. Georgetown alums should dominate the DC bar scene this weekend because there are a lot of us, we have jobs and therefore income, and because we want to show off how much we love our school and our team.

Sorry to have sounded dense. I know what happened in 1985 as far as the game is concerned but was not sure if there was something else I was missing. As far as your other comment, many people do what you suggested and that's one reason why we don't have thousands show up for game watches. If that's what one wants to do, more power to them, and we'll have our parties for those who want to be where large crowds of Hoyas are. As long as everyone is cheering somewhere for Georgetown.

My 2 cents: Georgetown bars will be mobbed. Get there early and fill the place with Hoya Saxa pride.

I'll be at McFaddens. When do bars in DC open? That might be a good time to get ready and get seats.

I am going to drive down to DC for Monday's game---don't worry, I used to be extremely superstitious but this team has killed off all of my phobias and neurotic tendencies concerning the Hoyas--- including, but not limited to talking about future games.
Anyway, my question is what kind of setup does McFadden's have and if I were to arrive Monday in the 6:00 range, would that be early enough so I would be able to watch the game there? I am always concerned about being able to see the game at a Game Watch type event.

Looks like the DC McFadden's opens up at 11:30 AM on Saturdays. www.mcfaddensdc.com/homepage.phpFrom their tours/pictures I can't tell which room is the one reserved for the gamewatch.

why is the "official" gamewatch page on gu servers listing town hall as the spot for saturday? The Hoya Hoop Club routinely has game watch parties there, so the web site routinely lists it. The DC Club has to notify the Hoyas Unlimited staff of our plans to be included on that listing, which we have done. From the email that went out about the DC club party: WHEN: 5:00 p.m. - Tip Off: 6:07 p.m., Saturday, March 31 The Club will have exclusive use of private Downstairs Dining Room (on the left side of the bar if you are facing the front door) until 8:30 p.m. If you get there earlier, you may be able to talk your way into that dining room, but I don't know. I'm not familiar enough with McFadden's to say.
