I'm of the ilk that keeps basketball rivalries separate from football. This is mostly because two of my favorite Eagles, Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook, are from Syracuse and Villanova, respectively. I also have issues with completely ripping apart Boston College, since my sister is a freshman there. She's also in the marching band, so she had alot riding on Saturday's game. If BC made a BCS bowl, the band would get to go. They would likely have gone to the Gator Bowl as well, but the Continental Tire Bowl doesn't provide funds to bring the entire band, so as a freshman she is likely left out. She spent the first part of Thanksgiving break at home, talking constantly about potential bowl scenarios in what we both agreed was the "unlikely event" of a Syracuse victory. I was sick of college football discussion by the time she went back to campus last Friday. However, I wanted her to be happy, which meant BC winning the game and going to the BCS. I don't like BC sports, mostly for their traitorous ways, but I couldn't actually support Syracuse either. So I watched the game as an "interested observer" of sorts, not rooting for either team, but still watching the game anyway. I don't know who I wanted to win before the game, but by the end of the third quarter I was pretty sure how I felt about the result of the game when I left the following voicemail on her phone while she was at the game:
Sister of Joe Hoya: "Leave a message and I'll get back to you."
Joe Hoya: (two full minutes of gagging and choking noises)
Adios, BC.
On a side note, I told my sister that not winning big games that lead to even bigger games was a consequence of being named the "Eagles". So next year I expect to see the Boston College PatrioSawx competing in the ACC.
