on defense, can belmont: 1. play zone 2. press full court
on offense, can belmont: 1. shoot well with someone in their grill 2. guards dribble penetrate because they cant shoot with someone in their grill 3. score from the paint against our front-court
i imagine they will try to play a real slow game like princeton did vs georgetown in '89 and hope to win it on % shooting and luck. but as far as i see it, as long as we take away their outside game, i cant see them having a chance without having huge luck on their side.

Doubt they'll play too slow. They've scored in the 90s far more times than the hoyas this year. Seems like we'll see a lot of 3's attempted. Their only losses in conference seem to have been to teams that slowed them down.

Yeah, they might not get out and run to the extreme, but I think we're looking at a major style difference here. What jumped out at me from looking at their individual season averages is that they have 10 guys averaging at least 10 minutes per game. Looks like they might sub frequently and look to run a lot. If it settles into a slower tempo though, they might just stick with their most dependable guys.
As far as the pace goes, they rank in the 130-150 range according to Pomeroy, whereas we rank about 328. I'm not too concerned about this disparity, considering we just hung with ND in a fast (or at least high-scoring) game and ND is ranked in the 30-50 range.

Okay, I have a problem.
During the first round game, I am scheduled to be at a ceremony. Should I skip the event so I can watch the game? Does it make a difference that the ceremony is for me to get sworn in as a Judge here in Virginia?
Who scheduled this stupid ceremony for Round 1 of the NCAA Tournament???

Belmont lost by 34 last year as a #15 to UCLA. Of the other #2's last year, Penn played within 8 points and Winthrop got within 2 points of Tennessee. No number 15's advanced last year.

Congrats on the judgeship, Hoo. I'd say you better go, maybe an earbud discreetly connected to a radio if you can get the radio PBP and definitely make sure the reception afterwards is somewhere with TV.

If I haven't mentioned this, once Eastern Kentucky was taken by UNC, I was yelling at the TV "Please be Belmont." So I'm pretty happy.
They're pretty much a crappy Georgetown. They're not going to bring some amazing pressure D or break us down with great individual moves. No, Belmont will run their offense and jack the first three they see. They can do that over the short but slow Atlantic Sun. Against Georgetown, let's say I have my doubts.

I definitely remember UCLA pummelling Belmont last year. They were totally focused. Howland didnt need to say much more than - first round loss to Princeton in 96. To me, it was the first sign that they had the focus to go deep in the tournment. That worked out well for them. I want us to do the same, as long as no injuries result, no harm comes to teams that crush their first round opponent.

Once you are sworn in, aren't you pretty much in charge? Have a big screen waiting and have them wheel it in immediately.

Anyone else really excited about the fact that Belmont has a true center that they'll (most likely) trust to guard Roy by himself?

Question...with the march madness on demand We will get to see the complete game? No cut ins to other games? Correct. However last year it was on a delay, and the ticker on CBS updated quicker than the MMOD feed. Still it's a good bet for watching a game that you want to see in its entirety. 100 POSTS! YES!

Wilbon is giving the Hoyas more love in his on-line chat right now Michael Wilbon: Because the committee members are enamored of the teams that make up college basketball royalty. This could work in favor of Georgetown, however. The Hoyas, good as they are, ought to go into the tournament with a chip on their shoulders. I'd take Georgetown over Kansas 7 times out of 10. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2007/03/07/DI2007030700759.html

GIGA, your analysis was comforting, but I still have some lingering worries about Belmont. I know it's more likely than not that we'll win big (as evidenced by the lackluster attitude on the board today), but I also think this is just the kind of team that can surprise us. Belmont is full of dudes who can BOMB from 3. They made 12 of 'em in the FIRST HALF of their conference finals, and sometimes when that happens to us and we fall behind early, we start heaving threes as well, which is not really our game. I'm obviously much less concerned about this kind of thing happening after the performance against ND, which was truly a masterful show of defense, poise & coaching, but we have to take this game seriously. I worry about what it could do to the team's confidence if this one is closer than expected, and I think we're much better suited to beat either Texas Tech or BC in the second round on little preparation, so I'd keep the focus right here.
That's not to sound pessimistic at all, just focused. The good news drastically outweighs the bad. We're faster and better defenders than any team Belmont has faced so far, and with hustle on D, we can take them out of their game early and pick up right where we left off in the BET. Also, (sorry if this has been said already), Belmont plays mostly man-to-man. They're not a bad defensive team at all, but I love our chances against anyone who tries to go man.
Finally, Jeff gave them some bulletin board material when he said he thought they were in Pennsylvania (see the Hoya article if you missed it), so even while I have every confidence that we'll win this one, I am hardly taking it for granted.
