Since we beat the 17K attendance for the UConn game ... how high above our average last year did we get? DFW?

What about Verizon attendance? McD probably takes down our average half a thousand or so. 11,518. Verizon-only numbers would be 6th or 7th in the league, depending how you count the Wachovia Center vs. Pavilion numbers for Villanova. On the other side of the ledger, even with a home game against Duke, St. John's drew less than 7,000 a game this season: Syracuse 21,488 Louisville 18,488 Marquette 15,345 Connecticut 13,012 Pittsburgh 11,611 Villanova 10,706 DePaul 10,551 Georgetown 10,441 West Virginia 9,649 Notre Dame 9,027 Cincinnati 8,831 Providence 8,410 St. John's 6,920 Seton Hall 6,636 Rutgers 5,453 USF 3,852

SJU also has Louie Arena, which is not nearly as accessible as MSG.

UConn also plays in two different arenas, although my lifetime disdain for that program has resulted in a lack of knowledge re: the comparative capacities of Gampel and the Civic Center, so I don't know how their attendance average is effected.

Are there any numbers on student attendance alone?

I can't believe we were outdrawn by DePaul. Agreed - that one is a stunner to me.

Just goes to show that DePaul is sitting on a gold mine if they ever truly get it together. And believe me, getting to the Horizon(or whatever it's called) in Rosemont is far worse in terms of time/traffic than getting to the Cap Center in Landover ever was.

It's actually not that tough... they had only six OOC home games (of which two were Kansas and Cal). So they could keep the numbers from tanking by having 57% of their home games as BE games.
On the other hand, we had nine OOC home games, of which none were of the super-draw potential (even if people had known Oregon was going to be as good as they turned out, it's still not a big ticket or huge alumni presence on the East Coast. Additionally, the 9 games overall was tough on average attendance, and the fact that the two in McDonough were capped at 2,500 a piece, and one that might have otherwise a naturally big draw -- Navy, due to the huge presence in the area -- wound up two days before Christmas.
For the sake of comparison, here's how the attendance figures looked for just conference games: Syracuse: 25,106 Louisville: 19,577 Marquette: 17,929 Georgetown: 15,077 Connecticut: 13,900 Pittsburgh: 12,348 Villanova: 12,330 DePaul: 11,338 WVU: 11,213 Providence: 9,995 Notre Dame: 9,773 Cincinnate: 9,1000 Seton Hall: 7,865 St. John: 7,650 Rutgers: 6,963 USF: 4,841

Those who claimed we would be in the 14 to 15K range were way off. If we didn't drop games early on and were highly ranked throughout the season, that would have gotten us those numbers. No one wants to see us against JMU on a Tuesday night. Until we have better OOC home games, we are always going to struggle with the numbers. This is why UMD, UVA, Duke, GW should all be on the schedule every year.

It took a while for the team to gel. We had 3 early losses and the sky was just about falling around here. Imagine if we played UVa and UMD early and lost those rather than beating, say, JMU and Towson?

We had a pretty decent ooc this year (although a lot on the road) and it helped prepare us for the whole season (esp. by exposing our weaknesses early so we could fix them, and also by raising our level of play). We should every year play at least that ooc or better. And we have to upgrade some of the rpi killers - those teams that are 250 and higher to be more in the 175-250 range - still very much easy games, but give us more learning and also better rpi etc.

I'd like to see us pass DePaul and 'Nova next year. With the right scheduling and promotion (and of coruse, a great Hoya team on the Court) I think we can do this easily -- Pitt's numbers might even be in reach!

Depaul's numbers are boosted by other fans, especially for games like Marquette. To be fair, our numbers are padded too by other fans, but not to the extreme extent that Depaul has to put up with

DePaul vs. Marquette was on the evening of Valentine's Day this year, so it wasn't the sellout that would have happened on a random Saturday afternoon.

You mean all of Milwaukee was unwilling to commute to Rosemont to spend Valentine's Day with their sweetheart, Lord Crean? Most people in Milwaukee don't even know who Tom Crean is. Other than when they go deep in the NCAA's, Marquette basketball is pretty irrelevant in Milwaukee.
