"I make the basketball team run the way the custodial service makes the University run," Shapland told the Voice. "It's something that needs to be done consistently and with little visibility. Sports Information is a service organization."
Could my posting of this quote here be construed as "flame-baiting"?

I'm not sure what's better, comparing himself to a janitor or the fact that he thinks the Sports Information Department is about as little visibility as possible.
I mean, aren't they supposed to be about as much visibility as possible?

Well, now that someone has brought it up I might as well chime in. I worked in the SID's office this summer and I have to say that Kevin, Sara and Renee are all tremendously hard workers who have absolutley elevated the media support of all Hoya sports exponentially above where they were even five years ago. A great group that deserve big props for doing a lot with a little. I think Bill is needlessly irascible and generally still buys into the notion that every scrap of information should be guarded as though its revelation will lead to the deaths of overseas operatives. He is incredibly bright but WAY too adversarial in his approach as I see it. He is perhaps a bit on the myopic side of things as well, particularly in regards to scheduling. Lots of reasons we can't do things like schedule opponents that generate interest in the program without acknowledgement of the benefits. Heh, this post guarantees he will never speak to me again.

Shapland sees his job like a janitor - his primary duty is to clean up other people's messes. You can't blame him for seeing it that way for the past few years, given the number of ineligibilities, coaching turmoil, and transfers that the program has seen. Most of us would consider Sports Information as an organization serving the fans and media. I don't think Shapland sees those two groups as his clients.
