Or at least of the past 28 years? On the front page of ESPN.com, they have a poll of which is the best game of the "SportsCenter Era" (1979-2007). The choices: 1985 NCAA championship game Super Bowl XXV - Giants v. Bills Game 7 of the 1991 World Series - Twins v. Braves 2006 Rose Bowl - Texas v. USC and, the RDF special: the 1999 Final of the Women's World Cup. ![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png) Vote away...

Easy call. Super Bowl XXV by a mile. Still the only Super Bowl to be decided by one point.

Wasn't everyone on ESPN declaring that Boise State-Oklahoma bowl game the greatest game ever played just a few weeks ago? Gotta love the collective short term memory/hypefest mentality that runs that place...

Lock this thread now. That game should never be mentioned under penalty of death. a coke fueled fluke is not the best anything.

That was a great game but there really wasn't anything on the line (i.e. championship). Great for Boise State and a highly entertaining game and that's about it.

Agree with TBird. That game was unreal, especially because it ended what may have been the greatest World Series ever.

Best college football game ever was Boise State v. Oklahoma this year but the best professional football game ever was the 1982 AFC divisional playoff between Miami and San Diego at the Orange Bowl. I'm not a particular fan of either team but I can still remember watching this game in my den as a teenager and feeling the emotional ebbs and flows that made it a classic. The hook and ladder play to end the half. Kellen Winslow catching 13 passes for 166 yards and blocking a field goal kick by Uwe von Schamann as time ran out to send into overtime, then having to be helped off the field from heat exhaustion. Dan Fouts and Don Strock both threw for over 400 yeards that day. The Chargers finally won in OT on a 29yard field goal by Rolf Benirschke. The game was shown on ESPN classic a couple years ago and I told my wife she should sit down and see the greatest game ever played. She laughed at me but after watching for a few minutes she was hooked. She finally agreed it was the best game she had ever seen and she is an Eagles fan. Plus how do you not like the kicker names? What ever happened to those wacky foreign kickers who used to be everywhere in the NFL?

Agree. Boise St. v. Okl. is best ever, or at least a tie with Flutie game (which I was watching as it was happening - incredible).

Best game since 1979 was the 1980 Olympic Mens' hockey game between the USA and USSR. Even when you throw out all the emotional aspects and the supposed mismatch it was still a great hockey game.
If you're looking beyond just games and at sporting events as a whole, my vote would go to the 1988 Italian Grand Prix. Probably the most emotional sporting event ever (in a good way).

Limiting this reply to Gtown NCAA championship games, the best one by far and arguably one of the best ever was the 1982 game Ewing's freshman season against North Carolina. A very well played game with 5 future NBA stars and never more than 6 points separating the teams going down to the last seconds. Even though we lost, that remains one my favorite games ever. If only Brown hadn't picked up his dribble...

Just a few notes here:
1. TBird is prejudiced. He picked game 7 of the Twins/Braves series because he's a Twins fan. That was a great series, but the best series ever was the double Red series in 1975, and the best baseball game played in the last 50 years was game 6 of that series. It had everything. Clutch hitting, clutch pitching, great defense, you name it.
2. Ignoring the pain caused by the GU/Nova championship game, and even though the result was a fluke, that game has to be the pick for best NCAA basketball championship game of the ESPN era. A team just can't shoot the way Nova did against the team with the best defense in the country. And to do that and win by only two points? It's almost as big a miracle as the miracle on ice (coke aside).
3. Wasn't the hockey game picked as the greatest sports moment of the last 30 years? Given that, how could it not be the best game?
4. Women's world cup championship game just edged out last year's little league world series championship game for the final spot on the list.
BTW, I do agree with Stafford that the GU/UNC game was a great game. I've rewatched that game a few times over the years. I will never be able to bring myself to rewatch the Nova game.

TBird and I have an unspoken agreement (I think...we don't speak about it) that he doesn't talk about that with me and I don't mention the 1998 NFC Championship game. IIRC a few years ago ESPN.com did a list ranking all of the World Series and 1991 and 1975 were #1 and #2. Everything's #2 to 1980 USA-USSR though. (EDIT: Also, I'd pick 1982 over 1985)

Having been born in Buffalo and attended Super Bowl XXV, and having attended GU undergrad and law school and attended the 1985 championship game, I truly want to thank you for reminding me yet again of two of the most miserable days of my life.

Ditto... except for the attending the 1985 championship game part.
