I am going to wait until lunch before I read it, but the articles look interesting. Good work, HOYA staff. Jersey, since you subscribe to HR you have already read the full transcripts of interviews of JT3, Bowman, Owens, Ross and Cook. Many of the quotes in The HOYA preview comes from those interviews so therefore, Jersey, you already read most of it before. This is not taking anything away from The HOYA staff who did a fine, fine job as always. For most people it will be all new material and that's what counts. There is also some stuff on the assistant coaches and editorials that I haven't read yet which I'm sure will be pretty good. (edited to point out a new interview with JT3 too). Let me add that The HOYA gets the stats wrong of an incoming GTown recruit, something that seems to be almost an annual problem for the paper. This is probably not a problem with the staff; its more likley that the online sources/services/records its relying on are erroneous. I kept up with every last GTown Prep game thanks to the printed edition of the Washington Post. Hibbert averaged somewhere close to 20 points per game, not 15 as The HOYA wrote. 15 points per I believe was less than Hibbert's junior average (or at least right at it). Trust me Hibbs had a much more successful senior season, particularly in scoring. I do wish there was an actual feature on a current Hoya. I don't recall coming across that. It was nice that someone did an interview with Mike Sweetney but I would have been glad to have substituted that interview for a sitdown with Bowman. The Washington Times Big East preview came out today and I have the same complaint with them. They went the predictable route with ANOTHER interview with JT3. No offense to Thompson but I have seen a million interviews on him since the day he's been hired. Even though Barker Davis wrote the article and I love his work, the fact is he had a hard time making this latest interview seem fresh. My favorite feature articles of this annual coverage by the Times have been the ones on Gerald Riley (going into his sophmore season) and Mike Sweetney. I wish that the WTimes had gone that route again and done something on Bowman or Owens or Cook.

I actually wrote that article and was torn about which numbers I should use. I saw the Post's writeup on both Hibbert and Green (I think that It had Hibbert at 19 a game) but was unable to find any stats for the other players. Rivals.com also had Hibbert at 17 pts a game I think. The final numbers I got were all from the same source, bigeast.org. www.bigeast.org/sports/mbball/teams/gae/recruits.aspI figured that they had to have the correct stats because they are the most official site I could find with actual statistics of our players. Incidentally, GUhoyas.com now has a fact sheet that has Hibbert at 15 points a game, but differs from the Bigeast on its info for Green. It appears to be pretty tough to find one good source on high school players stats because even official sites differ in their info. Anyway, let me know what you all think of my article and the rest of the Hoya Bball preview. I heard that the staff worked pretty hard to get it out.

The freshman article was good, I thought. Better than standard Hoya fare.
For Hibbert's points, the Washington Post has a feature called stat central that give his points per each game. He averaged close to 20. But no big whoop.
Oh, and one of the articles says the Temple game is on a Saturday, I think.

the following excerpt from the article on the Top Games is nonsense:
TEXT
A "Must-win" in his first game coaching against a solid (not great) opponent. C'mon, it would be a good win and a great start to the season but only the insane would be seriously disappointed if we didn't happen to win this game. Now, if we aren't even competitive in the Temple game, then I might be a little disappointed but I still would be saving the "must-win" phrase until the Big East season starts.

I left out the text. Here is the statement that I was referring to.
TEXTThe Skinny: Georgetown opens up the season against Temple in a game that is a must-win for John Thompson III.

I agree, while I personally think that we have a decent shot at this game, I think that it will be a while before W-L record is an accurate way to measure the progress of this team.
I'll be happy if we improve in fundamentals, defense, rebounding, and teamwork. Wins will be great, but they'll be a bonus as the team learns a brand new style of play.

Has any student come across a paper copy of the preview? I have not been able to find one, but I have only looked in Leo's and ICC 3.

Must win? That's pure balderdash, and I hope not reflective of the attitude on campus. TrueHoyaBlue has it right.

I haven't seen a paper yet either, but I already found a mistake online. There is a special on Sweetney and they claim that he left Georgetown as the number two all-time leading scorer, come on guys!

While all-time leading scorer usually refers to total points, Iverson and Sweets are 1-2 in career scoring average. Amazing that Iverson had 23 ppg with no years as an upperclassman.

In my mind it always refers to total points. I know that Sweets had the second highest average, but thats a different stat.

I picked up the paper version of the Hoya coming out from Leo's at about 6:30. There was a huge stack, so I figure it had just gotten there. Sometimes it takes a while for the Hoya to be distributed, but generally it's always out by sometime on Tuesday/Friday.
While I haven't read it all yet, but plan to (I have already digested my healthy dose of preseason fare at this point), I like what I see. The commentaries look pretty good, and almost all of them mention the game at McDonough against San Jose State, which is awesome to see. I expect a big turnout on December 11.
The overwhelming optimism and expecting students to come win or lose (as I hinted at in my article) is refreshing. Lastly, the basketball section is in retro style, which in spite of being ridiculously overdone everywhere, is still pretty cool.

Yeah, I just picked up my copy coming out of Leo's as well. Just seeing JT III on the cover gave me an awesome feeling. The fact that we now have a coach that can be used to promote the team is such a good feeling.

hahahaha, my bad, that was just a spelling ecord. I mean't coach. However, there will be a couch somewhere next to the student section this season that the fan of the game from the previous game gets to chill on.
on edit: damn, you can even write er*or on this board without it being changed into ecord

One that's informative about the freshmen which is more than the main newspapers in the area can claim. Hope to see more of your work as the year progresses. As for my issue with Hibbert's average, its hard for anyone to get reliable information. Major newspapers and annual college basketball magazines get the stats wrong all the time. The only thing one can do is try to find a site that lists every game and how much the player in question scored. Not too many sites like that (the Post is an exception). Still stats on scoring are a whole lot easier to find than stats on assists, rebounds and blocks.

Just picked up a hard copy and it looks great. Really good pictures of the team and JTIII. Also they made it so each page has an article on the men's and the women's team, which I thought was cool.
Check out the articles on "the new era," "the attendance required" and " the 1985 team". I think those were the best articles (not to mention the article on the 1985 team will get you pumped up for the season).
