Not much to say here except I think we should be favored versus them. They lost a lot, and this is a team we beat on the road last year.
They aren't going to do much for the ol' RPI though.

I would like to see more big ten, acc, SEC teams even if they are bottom of the barrel type squads so we can get better pre-season play then against schools like davidson, etc....

Davidson should be better than Penn State this year. If we win that one, I'd be pretty pleased, especially since it's fairly early in the season and I think it will take a while for the guys to become acclimated to a new system. I'd be disappointed if we didn't beat Penn State by double digits.

I love having Temple at home as our first game. It is an early test for us and should give us an immediate sense for where the team is at this point.

Plus Temple almost always gets better as the season goes along.

Yeah, my thinking too, Gold. Temple will also be coming off of a Friday game against Auburn, which they would definitely need to prepare for as well, whereas we can run a full week of practices in preparation.

Plus, I think that while the Hoyas will have a number of disadvantages as they learn the new system, they will also present a challenge to other teams (especially early on) who won't have much data for scouting.

Scouting is not necessarily helpful when facing the Princeton system at this level. Face it. Everyone in the world knows what is coming off. Boeheim knew exactly what to expect when SU played Princeton. “We spent quite a bit of time in practice working on playing man to man against Princeton. We took away their backdoors and just let them beat us off the dribble. We did a poor job in our man to man. We felt all along that we would play some zone, but I thought we could get by a little longer than we did in the man to man," Boeheim said. So, he recognized how the Princeton offense requires passing more than anything and focused on that defensively.
The key, more generally, is to maintain discipline, and that cannot necessarily be taught. Syracuse only turned the ball over 12 times, which is a large reason why they won. When Princeton plays UNLV or Fresno, they are able to fluster those guys enough to control the flow of the game by running the clock down off of turnovers and missed shots. If teams don't value the ball and see the importance of each possession, they'll lose against Princeton.

Lack of discipline, not valuing the ball and getting flustered? Sounds something like last year's Hoyas.
I'm hoping for the best next week, but I don't think we can expect miracles based on one month of practice.

Normally, I'd be pessimistic for the first game. After all, III has had about 70 hours of practice time, and that's it. You can't spend all of that teaching the offense, so they aren't exactly veterans in it.
But Temple has a lot of turnover, with Blackshear and Hawkins gone. So they might struggle to score, too, especially if we can shut down Mardy Collins.
There have been rumors that we may go small, which would be interesting versus Temple. They have a 7' center and some size.
