Sounds like a great idea to me. Especially since I'm not a DC taxpayer. Maybe we can get Abe to boost the ask a little and give $20 million or so to us for a refurbished McDonough.

He should request a new scoreboard first. Today the replay screen had the day off... which made the Chevy Chase bank card giveaway and the Fan-o-The Game nearly difficult. This coming on the heels of the player points/fouls part of the board getting taking the last game off.

And he should hire new concessions staff first too. Bunch of ornery bastards who make it seem like they're doing you a favor to hand you a hot dog. I stood in line today for 20 minutes at the Acela Club level BBQ stand WITHOUT MOVING. This one old bag was just verrrrry slooooooowly cutting up a brisket in front of all of us, taunting us. I wanted to pick it up and hit her on the head with it. One guy finally lost it and yelled "WILL SOMEONE HERE JUST DO THEIR JOB!?!?!?" Finally, I gave up and went to another stand. But those lazy ass employees are costing Abe some serious money.

DC should pay him. And I'm a DC taxpayer. He payed for Verizon out of his own pocket (the city threw in a few million or so to help out with parts of the overall construction) and that bit of kindness may be the biggest gift DC has gotten in an eternity. It had totally revitalized that part of town and was a major factor in the growth of downtown DC in general.

As a D.C. taxpayer, I say fine, as long as the improvements are financed solely through tax hikes on tix for VC events. Of course, that raises the question, if you do that, why not raise that revenue yourself through hiking lease rates, etc.? I think everyone appreciates what a great thing Abe Pollin did for the city by building the arena out of his own pocket. Why go for public financing now, especially now that the D.C. populace has such a bad taste in their mouths re stadium deals?

Crazy idea, but what if WE co-funded the renovations by diverting game revenue/merchandizing in exchange for verizon center/DC helping to fund an eventual on campus arena? It would force the school into actually building the damn thing and might sooth over relationships with the city for zoning purposes.
Probably never happen, but a thought to chew on

"The company plans to more than quadruple the price of luxury suites, which have been leased for $100,000 annually since the arena opened in 1997. The new price will be $450,000 annually for 10 years. "
$450,000/year for a luxury boxes? In this competitive a soprts entertainment market? Wow, I think Abe reach has exceeded his grasp on that one . . . I thought we had it bad with the HHC rate hikes!

Somehow, the Verizon gods managed to get the replay screen working for this evening's Caps game. The screen must have had a rough night last night and was just a little too tired to wake up for the afternoon game

Loved the green line on the Jumbotron today. I didn't catch it, but I heard it also briefly flickered a picture of Jeff Green in the second half.

Shocked that they had it fixed for the Caps. Wonder if it would have worked if the Caps had been playing at noon. Somehow I think it would have gotten fixed.

I hope if the $50M comes through, he can do something about the building's acoustics. I have been very happy with how the student section (and really all the fans in general) have progressed over the past 2-3 years in terms of making noise at games, but talk about a place where sound goes to die... the Verizon Center certainly does no favors to the home team in terms of its acoustics.
