As expected, there is an article on ESPN.com today about Georgetown and St.Johns written by Andy Katz. It's pretty good stuff, interesting, and good for publicity. JT III is also included on the men's basketball page picture and front page (same picture) but the bulldog logo they used is that weird newest version that I don't like very much. It looks too friendly and a little too much like a cartoon character. Men's basketball page: sports.espn.go.com/ncb/indexFallen Giants article: sports.espn.go.com/ncb/preview2004/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=1919593

Good article. Some nice tidbits in there, including the fact that they had to increase the "funding around the program" and most all of JTIII's quotes.

Interesting quote from the article:
The problem was the Hoyas hadn't gone through a coaching search since they hired Thompson in 1972. They didn't know what it took, hitting Thompson III with a low figure that ultimately came up. They also had to increase the funding around the program.
A lot of us theorized pay and support were behind the delay. Seems as though we may have been right.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it disturbing that an ESPN writer would judge a team's relevence by how often that team plays on ESPN?
I hope to God they didn't leave us off the ESPN schedule this year because they knew Katz was writing this article...
Eh, there probably a few other reasons they could have to justify leaving us off.

Yeah, if JT III in fact requested that more money be put into the program before accepting the job than I congratulate him on the move. We certainly do need more support for the program if we want to be successful.

We certainly do need more support for the program if we want to be successful. Just an opinion, but I haven't seen anything to suggest that there's any more money in the men's basketball's pool than before. A few extra dollars won't elevate the salary much ahead where it was a few years ago, which is likely in the bottom quartile of the Big East. It's another question what and how much needs (or does not need) to be spent on the sport. While St. John's is finishing a new practice facility and coaching offices that will be ready by next season, nothing is changing at Georgetown's on-campus McDonough Gym. "When I walked in here, they were the same offices I remember since I was six," JT3 said.

but the bulldog logo they used is that weird newest version that I don't like very much. It looks too friendly and a little too much like a cartoon character. I dunno... I for one like that weird newest version thing, and I'd like to see it used more. Probably not gonna happen, but I like it just the same. The cartooniness doesn't really bother me at all.

"When I walked in here, they were the same offices I remember since I was six," JT3 said. Yeah, that's pretty sad. One of the most storied programs in modern college basketball, and yet we have a high school gym. It's been mentioned a million of times before, but it still Editedes me off.

One of Coach's first priorities upon taking the job was getting the offices updated and fixed up. Not sure if that was a condition of his taking the job, but it was pretty much the first thing he wanted done upon arrival.

Doug Gottlieb has an article about UCLA also on ESPN.com where he mentions how horrible their facilities still are. Guess we aren't the only ones who think it's still the 1980s.
