My understanding is that teams through the 4th seed have "protected seeding". What does this mean exactly?
Does this mean that they will place these teams as close to home as possible, or does this merely mean they will not make them face an opponent who will be playing a pseudo home game?
Obviously we can't play in the D.C. Region, but Minneapolis or Atlanta would certainly be preferable to Oakland.

Seeds 1-5 have protection in the first round. Meaning that if Georgetown were to get a 5 seed...they wouldn't be made to play BYU in Salt Lake City for instance.
However in the second round, those seeds will not be protected. In 2004, Pittsburgh as a 3 seed had to play the 6-seeded Wisconsin Bagers in Milwaukee.
In 2002, Mississippi St as a 3 seed had to ply the 6-seeded Texas Longhorns in Dallas.
They try to keep you as close to home as possible, but somebody is going to be upset about that cross country trip to San Diego.

Does this mean that if we get a top 5 seed, then we would automatically be in the Southeast Region with Duke (since we can't play in MCI for the 3rd/4th rounds)?
I'd rather travel and be in the bracket with Memphis or one of the Big East teams than have to play the Blue Devils again, though beating them twice in the same season would be absolutely fantastic!!

if we get a top 5 seed and the conference only gets 8 teams in, we're probably either gonna be in the Oakland or Atlanta region. That just depends on what the committee does with the bracket.

The top 5 "protected" seed only refers to the fact that we wouldn't have to play a team somewhat close to their home in the first round. Andy Katz had an interesting piece, "10 Questions for the Selection Committee" or something like that. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=2338089
