Well, St. Francis looks like an opportunity get game minutes for this young team. They have three 25+ point losses to major conference teams. They also had an 8 point loss to Mount St. Mary's
Looking at the statistical profile....
They have a poor offense. Their defense isn't much better.
They are prone to turning over the ball. They are quite poor in offensive rebounding and getting to the foul line. They are not likely to steal the ball.
This looks like a chance to have the bottom half of the rotation get some extended minutes to gain more confidence.

I'm betting on the under, if he plays 35 or more, it was a bad day for the Hoyas. |

This is the weakest opponent to date so we should dominate. Once we have a decent lead, I would love to see them try and get someone going from the bench offensively along with Drew F. We need someone to be able to provide some value on that end of the bench and so far the only one that showed some promise apparently is out of the rotation with McKenna. I'm guessing it will be Hala and we know Fielder can shoot. It would be nice to have another guard outside the starters to provide something. Mulready could score in HS so maybe this is a good opponent to give him some chances.

Well said - get some of the bench players some experience and maybe some development and confidence will follow. One thing we need to keep in mind about the bench is that basically everybody on the team is young. In the old days, when you did not have NIL or no-sit transfers, your starters tended to be upperclassman, or at least sophomores, unless that freshman was really great (like Greg Monroe, for example). On teams like that, giving some guys on the bench more minutes made sense because the upperclassman were already familiar with the coaches, playing full seasons, etc. The bench, contrarily, did not. Here, we have almost nobody with experience playing in college, nevermind with one another. That is partly why I think Cooley is playing the starters plus the next 3-4 off the bench and not cleaning out the bench at the end of the game. Our starters other than Epps and Peavy are extremely young, our bench is even younger, and the guys who aren't seeing many minutes right now are for the most part freshman. So, I can understand why Ed Cooley is doing what he is doing. If our top 8-9 guys do not have time to gel and get better (the Notre Dame effort won't suffice), the team is doomed. As CTHoya said, a lot of people are big on the "clean out the bench in the last 2-3 minutes" approach, but I am also skeptical it matters much other than for morale. Under the right circumstances, I would think a coach can do this. But, I am not sure we are there yet, given that Cooley hasn't really even found his rotation yet, and the guys who are playing are young and have little experience with one another. St. Francis is even worse than Mount Saint Marys, and Mount Saint Marys was very bad. If we are up 40 with 2 minutes left, do you let the walk-ons and vaunted three point sharpshooter Austin Montgomery play? Sure, if Cooley feels like our rotation guys have played well and gotten sufficient minutes. If not, then no. |
