Plans being announced as we go. Remember the public outrage at the child custody case of Elian Gonzalez and that famous picture? How will the American public respond to pictures of the US military rounding up immigrants, including women and children, to be placed in camps?? Granted, the child custody case is dissimilar to deportation of undocumented immigrants, but the fact is that the next administration will certainly not give a flying you-know-what about "optics" (conversely and perversely, it will likely actually revel in the display of cruelty to the undocumented and their family members, which will likely include green card holders and AMCITS). Be prepared for a second round of family separations from the MAGA GOP "Christians." www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/11/4/20938885/miami-cuba-elian-gonzalez-castroPope Francis emphasizes that God not only walks with His people but also dwells within them, especially in the poor, marginalized, and those on the peripheries. The encounter with a migrant or refugee is an opportunity to meet Christ and to grow in love, compassion, and faith. How about that "love, compassion, and faith?" VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Working to turn migrants away from the prospect of peace and security in a new country is "a grave sin," Pope Francis said. "It needs to be said clearly: There are those who systematically work by all means to drive away migrants, and this, when done knowingly and deliberately, is a grave sin," he said during his general audience Aug. 28. The pope began his audience in St. Peter's Square by explaining that he would "postpone the usual catechesis" -- he currently is in the middle of a series of talks about the Holy Spirit -- to discuss "the people who -- even at this moment -- are crossing seas and deserts to reach a land where they can live in peace and security." "Brothers and sisters, we can all agree on one thing: Migrants should not be in those seas and in those lethal deserts," he said. "And, unfortunately, they are there." But migrants cannot be deterred from those deadly crossings "through more restrictive laws, nor through the militarization of borders, nor through rejections," the pope said. "Instead, we will achieve it by expanding safe and legal avenues for migrants, by facilitating sanctuary for those fleeing wars, violence, persecution and many calamities; we will achieve it by fostering in every way a global governance of migration based on justice, fraternity and solidarity." www.usccb.org/news/2024/pope-driving-away-migrants-grave-sin

I think maybe the Pope doesn’t understand God as well as Trump does. Many people are saying that Jesus hates the Pope at this point and Jesus’ greatest concern is the financial success of evangelical Christians who are giving enough money to their pastors. This will all be reflected in Bible 2.0 which Trump publishing expects to be released next year. Free download of Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American” for first 1000 buyers.

That's HILARIOUS. I don't think those "Christians" are following their "faith" as closely as Pope Francis seems to be hoping they are.

This is going to be done in the least humane way possible because the cruelty is the point. Every country’s proudest time is when they put people in camps. I’m sure history will look upon this fondly.

This is going to be done in the least humane way possible because the cruelty is the point. Every country’s proudest time is when they put people in camps. I’m sure history will look upon this fondly. I wonder if Sen. Lankford will be on board with the use of the military in this fashion. Say what you will about his position on other issues but I believe he successfully negotiated in good faith for the only comprehensive immigration bill bill since the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 aka Simpson-Mazzoli bill. At that time, DOJ;s Office of Immigration Litigation was located next to our suite of Civil Division offices at DOJ. OIL had a total of about 12 attorneys back then. It has been elevated to a Branch (i;e., larger organzation with the DOJ structure) and employs hundreds of attorneys. Reagan granted amnesty to about 3.5 million undocuments immigrants under that bill. Imagine the MAGA GOP doing anything as humane and practical as that. MAGA GOPers would rather revel in their performative cruelty masquerading as a policy.

Closer to home, the city, and the University by extension, may have trouble ahead if Trump seeks to establish personal hegemony over the District.
Enter Mike Davis, potential attorney general candidate. He told Steve Bannon in April he aims to be "Trump's viceroy of D.C. " because "I don't like democracy. I want more authoritory [sic] powers." What that exactly means, who knows: it's mostly social media fodder, but if implemented could land somewhere between squashing home rule and martial law, any of which of which would play well on state TV (Fox) and the state-friendly press (aka Jeff Bezos' future plans for the Washington Post). Relative to the University, a predatory DOJ in an unstable city would be a risk factor as to whether students see post-2024 Washington as unsafe or unsuitable for college, much like Columbia and Fordham fared in the New York of the 1970s.
Trump has a notoriously short attention span, of course, and would eventually back off such stunts when he sees international and/or corporate pushback that makes him look bad. But putting in zealots in key government positions comes with a price.

Cue the classified-documents prosecutions of scores of rank-and-file government employees. Oh, the irony.
