Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,

I am writing to share that earlier today, Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia was admitted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center after suffering a stroke. After surgical intervention, he is in stable condition in the presence of his wife, Theresa, and son, JT.

We are grateful to the medical professionals at MedStar Health who are ensuring that President DeGioia is receiving the best possible care. We will continue to keep members of our community informed.

On behalf of the Georgetown University Board of Directors, I am confident that the entire Georgetown community joins us in wishing President DeGioia a swift recovery. We will keep Jack, Theresa and JT in our prayers.

Both my parents had strokes, my mother at 65. If you catch them early and get the right treatment asap then it is amazing what recoveries can be made. Hopefully that happened in DeGioia's situation.

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:

I write today to provide an update. President DeGioia is receiving excellent care at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and remains in stable condition.

We are heartened to see so many expressions of support for Jack and his family.

In this moment, we are following the University Bylaws, which provide that: “In the absence of the President, the duties of that office shall be performed by the Provost.” I have spoken to Provost Robert M. Groves, and I shared that he and the senior academic and administrative leadership of the University have the full confidence of the Board of Directors.

Bob will work closely with Joe Ferrara, Vice President and Chief of Staff to the President, President DeGioia’s senior leadership team, and colleagues in the President’s Office to support ongoing University operations. The Board of Directors is in close touch with University leadership and will be regularly engaged during this period.

On behalf of the DeGioia family and the Board of Directors, we wish to thank all of those who have reached out to offer prayers and support. The outpouring of love has been overwhelming.

Thoughts and prayers with the DeGioia family but between Jack's stroke and the Marquette President dying Sunday while in Italy on a Jesuit Formation Pilgrimage with the Society of Jesus and the Marquette Board (he had been battling Cancer for three years), there's a Dan Brown novel outline waiting to happen. Dear Colleagues:

We wanted to take this opportunity to share that President DeGioia continues to make progress and has begun rehabilitation from the stroke he suffered on June 5. The DeGioia family is grateful for the outpouring of prayers and well wishes from the Georgetown community. His doctors are pleased with his progress, and we will keep the University community informed when there are updates to share in the weeks ahead.

During President DeGioia’s recovery, the leadership team is working each day to continue University affairs and operations in a coordinated manner. In this time, communication within the community is paramount, and we continue to engage with faculty and staff leaders through established frameworks across our campuses, including the Faculty Senate and Staff/AAP Advisory Council. We continue to execute University priorities and initiatives. We are also engaging with the Board of Directors, who have expressed their full confidence in our academic and administrative teams.
