A very sad day. His joy and enthusiasm for life were infectious; he often made me shake my head with some of his commentaries, but usually I was smiling while I did so. Truly a renaissance man. The world is a lesser place without him.

This came out of nowhere. I had not read anything about this prior to the obit.
Putting aside his ties to the final days of the Conference of Champions, he was among the greatest college basketball players that ever lived. For all ESPN does to hype up the here and now, nothing matches his last college game of the 1972-73 season, shooting 21 of 22 from the field in the NCAA final versus Memphis State.
The missed shot? A dunk, which was considered basket interference back then.

I recall that the one missed shot was a turnaround jumper that was in and out. But as I said on the other thread, this was the greatest performance ever in an NCAA championship game.

Certainly, one of the best players ever. Always fun to listen too. Terrible news. Will miss his commentary.

Could be--this was slightly before my time but I read one account that there was basket interference. It wasn't seen on the video.

I’m sadly old enough to have watched it live and while I don’t remember the miss I don’t think it was a “basket interference” dunk, because I seem to recall he had at least three of those waived off as illegal and they were turnovers not misses. Making his shooting all the more impressive by today’s standards/rules.

Apropos of nothing other than the dunk discussion, I was fortunate enough to attend the 1970 Final Four held at Cole Field House, where UCLA beat Jacksonville (we all remember Jacksonville, right?). UCLA trailed early, and about 10 minutes or so into the game, Sidney Wicks dunked over Artis Gilmore. The crowd gasped, and of course the dunk was disallowed, but it proved to be the turning point of the game, won by UCLA going away.
