Having once sat through a week of ESPN playing up John Thompson signing with the Denver Nuggets, I'll believe this one when I see it. Yes, I remember. Isn’t that when the Jesuits handed him the keys to his fiefdom? Isn’t that when he/Falk renegotiated his contract with GU and Thompson became Coach for Life, founder of his family business, etc…?

Having once sat through a week of ESPN playing up John Thompson signing with the Denver Nuggets, I'll believe this one when I see it. The NBA has a track record of chewing up college coaches (Vitale, Massimino, Tarkanian, even Pitino). I think it might be a week or more before there is a formal announcement. I would think the NBA doesn't want to take away from the NBA Finals to make a coaching announcement, but I could be wrong about that

Rob hasn’t kept up with Cooley for the since March of 2023? Dauster and Goodman are now online and pushing a new "first call": Bruce Pearl. Cooley's brand among the chattering class isn't as strong after year one. Pearl is a really good coach and an excellent recruiter, but he still has some baggage from his past stops. Not sure UConn would overlook that, but I don't doubt that Pearl would do a great job at UConn

Would be a great time for him to move. There is no such thing as NCAA violations anymore, so any previous "baggage" can be swept away pretty easily.

"Cassidy Awards: 2024 Pangos All-American Camp... HIGHLIGHT MACHINE: Oswin Erhunmwunse A staggering blend of size, elite-level athleticism and burgeoning skill, Erhunmwunse is the kind of prospect that turns heads in warmups before a game even begins. The 6-foot-10 forward is plenty effective once the first whistle blows, however, and showcased fluidity and a good basketball IQ at Pangos. At one point, he impressed onlookers with a standstill dunk that saw him stick his elbow through the rim and hang for a few seconds after the finish. Combine that sort of athletic prowess with his knack for shot-blocking and his ability to put the ball on the floor, and you have a recipe for versatility at the college level. There’s almost no doubt that the Providence commit be able to impact Big East games from day one of his freshman season Recruitment: Erhunmwunse is committed to Providence and is mulling a possible reclassification to 2024." basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/cassidy-awards-2024-pangos-all-american-camp

Most of the online and radio "insiders" think he will listen to Lakers, get a huge offer and then wait for UConn to give him a big raise and turn down the Lakers offer. Should be interesting

Should be interesting I'm going to bet that Hurley's ego (and that's not meant neccesarily in a perjorative way) leads him to take the Lakers job - to compete and win at the highest level. In that sense, he's the opposite of his father who AFAIK was never seriously tempted to coach college ball.

We'll see what happens, but I predict a Coach K/Lakers outcome for Hurley... soak up the attention for a few days, financially leverage UConn, and return to school a hero.
I'm certain his style wouldn't be well received. NBA coaching is an entirely different job and the LA media/fanbase/players would probably ruin him.
History is also against him. Brad Stevens is the only one who made the direct jump and met expectations. Billy Donovan is middling. Larry Brown and Quin Snyder succeeded but had previous NBA experience. Everyone else was a disappointment, including some heavy hitters (Pitino, Calipari, Tarkanian, Beilein).

It's hard to picture Dan Hurley screaming at LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but the money may be too much to ignore...especially if he is driven by the challenge of being an NBA coach.
The coaching fallout could be wild, if Hurley leaves UConn. Kimani Young, Tom Moore and Luke Murray co-caoched when Hurley was sidelined with COVID and each could be considered, but I would not be surprised if Steve Pikiell (UConn grad and head coach at Rutgers) is not in the mix.

Wait, Fanta was also the one who said we had a fat Top 5 NIL bag… Generally, I think Fanta is reliable and puts a lot of work into his reporting. That said, I do think there is a distinction lost here when it comes to NIL. Before everyone knew NIL markets would blow up, it's possible that Georgetown was expected to have top 5 NIL money. Then when everything went crazy, Calipari went to Arkansas, etc. it became obvious that was not true. So, it's possible that when Fanta reported the "fact" there was reason to think it was true. And then the situation changed. I would actually be far more concerned if we DID have top 5 NIL and still missed out on all of our high level targets for center. Not having top 5 NIL actually makes it easier to understand, though still not acceptable in my view. The staff needs to do better regardless. That fact is that recruiting for a program in the dumps is hard. Cooley contributed to that with a bad year 1. He cannot afford a similar year 2. If the coaching carousel begins because of Hurley, hopefully we can take advantage. But, who knows if that will even happen.

Butler could be a sneaky team, the Davis loss hurts but Telfort, Brooks & McCaffery is a nice wing set
