Well, that is a scary thought that our fortunes will be sealed in roughly 6 weeks.

Well, that is a scary thought that our fortunes will be sealed in roughly 6 weeks. It certainly was last year when we didn’t get Spencer and Dickinson. They need to have a better plan this time.

With no hate or malice towards any of these guys intended, we should have 0 feelings of disappointment or questioning of the staff if anyone from a 9-23 team doesn't return. Quite frankly it will be more concerning if we have most of the same core starting/playing big minutes. Only one I would love to stick around is Fielder as I think he has some serious upside as a stretch 4 for us. All of the success Cooley had at PC was driven by players who had experience playing for him, I think the staff needs to retain as many of the new kids as possible bring in the youngsters & then fill in the rest with portal players. This isn't a knock-on Cooley but he isn't an innovative or system type coach, he's a motivator who needs time to get players on the same page.

Yeah it’s pretty clear from watching this season that Cooley isn’t an Xs/Os guru. Always thought his Providence teams played an ugly but tough brand of basketball. Was surprised this season to see both an ugly style and lack of toughness.

I mean you can absolutely make that argument about the coaching itself, and I agree that you need some sort of continuity to build a program, but our problem was mostly a talent one this year. Hands down. So in year two, he's building with the future with the frosh coming in, but he better be swinging for the fences in the portal and not guarantee anyone a spot. Period. We can nitpick the in game coaching if we're on par or higher than others talent wise; right now just get me dudes who can ball and have a motor.

The top issue for the team was defense, the roster had enough talent to be a top 175 to 150 defense. The stats show the defensive metrics changed a lot when Fielder was on the floor instead of Cook. As horrible as this season has been we have to remember most of the minutes went to players who never played major minutes at this level with that in mind I think there could be nice jumps from some of them next season. All I read before the season started was how Cooley was in it for the long haul, now 7 months later I'm reading a lot of tear-it-down posts.

(especially after 6 or 7 years of mostly painful results)

I think it’s lunacy to not want Epps to be a key part of our team next year. All of his shortcomings are correctable.

I'm not a fan of his game but I agree 100% with this take And I think the same of Brumbaugh - needs to develop but pray we can keep him growing w us. Need guys that are down to develop over a few years. I'd love an upper class Rowan. Just get him a true PG to be behind next year. As far as Epps goes, I'm in the camp that surround him with better talent and see how he does. Someone pointed out his shooting % were the same last year at Illinios on lower usage...sounds like he's on the right track developmentally. Kept his %s while increasing usage. Next year is increasing those %. I know the portal is huge nowadays but to me, the best retention strategy is still recruiting top players from HS that want to be at your school. Then fill out your core with the portal guys.
