Not much extreme movement in this week’s Associated Press Top 25. Connecticut once again leads the pack, as the Huskies improved to 20-2 with wins over Providence (74-65) and at Madison Square Garden against St. John’s (77-64). Purdue is again #2, after the Boilermakers ran their record to 21-2 with victories against Northwestern (105-96, in overtime) and at then-#6 Wisconsin (75-69). North Carolina remained #3 after the 18-4 Tar Heels lost at unranked Georgia Institute of Technology (74-73) and defeated then-#7 Duke at home (93-84). Kansas advanced four spots, from #8 to #4, after the Jayhawks moved to 18-4 with home victories against Oklahoma State (78-65) and then-#4 ranked Houston (78-65), while 19-3 Houston fell one slot from #4 to #5 after a 76-72 overtime win at Texas and the loss at then-#8 Kansas.
Rinse and repeat. There are three Big East Conference schools ranked in the AP Top 25, with Marquette and Creighton joining Connecticut while no other Big East Conference schools received any votes in this week’s rankings. Marquette moved up two spots, from #9 to #7, after the 17-5 Golden Eagles picked up road wins against Villanova (85-80) and Georgetown (91-57), and Creighton fell six slots, from #13 to #19, after the 16-6 Bluejays won at home against DePaul (85-62) and lost at home against unranked Butler (99-98).
South Carolina and San Diego State are ranked this week, replacing Oklahoma and Texas Christian. The Gamecocks are #15 this week after improving to 19-3 with road victories at then-#5 Tennessee (63-59) and at Georgia (72-62), and the Aztecs are back in the rankings at #24 after moving to 17-5 with a 79-71 loss at unranked Colorado State and an 81-67 win against then-#17 Utah State. Oklahoma, now 16-6, fell out of the polls from #23 after the Sooners picked up a road win at Kansas State (73-53) and a road loss at unranked Central Florida (74-63), and Texas Christian, also 16-6, dropped out from #25 after the Horned Frogs defeated then-#15 Texas Tech (85-78) and lost at home to unranked Texas (77-66). Alabama had the biggest jump in this week’s poll amongst ranked teams, moving up eight slots from #24 to #16 after the Crimson Tide improved to 16-6 with an 85-76 win at Georgia and a 99-67 victory against Mississippi State; Texas Tech had the largest drop in this week’s AP Top 25 amongst ranked teams, falling eight spots from #15 to #23 after the 16-5 Red Raiders lost at then-#25 ranked Texas Christian (85-78) and against unranked Cincinnati (75-72).
