Terrific win by the Hoyas, especially because it seemed totally unexpected by the experts on Flo. Way too much "analysis". Please let us watch the beautiful game without so much talk.
Coach Weise's sub strategy was brilliant, keeping fresh legs on the field, trusting his subs, while Akron kept its starters in until they were limping off the field. Like Russky said, they were "gassed and battered" by OT.

Yep, second game in a row where Brian's man management strategy, which carried some real risks, ended up being high-reward. In the Creighton game, the 'third line' actually got the lone goal. Against Akron, they gave up the tying goal, but hung on well enough and did their job of wearing Akron out. When we got the 'first line' subs in right around the 20-minute remaining mark in the second half, I felt like the run of play would really tilt in our favor and that, absent something fluky, the Hoyas should pull away in the remaining 20 minutes of non-PK time. And so it was. The game itself was an instant classic, one that will be remembered for a long time. The conditions turned it into a grittier affair than maybe either team would have preferred...especially the Zips... but the field held up well. Stylistically, it had something for everyone, and even Akron's repeated passing it around the backline that drove some of their fans nuts ended up leading to a number of long-distance connections that quickly put them deep into the attack. If you look at some of the Akron fan posts, they share the sentiment that it was a highly entertaining affair. Brian mentioned in his post-game that he had some injuries to manage, including Tate missing his first game. That played a role in the subbing strategy, and it makes it even more impressive that the team pulled it off as they did. Akron had a rough non-conference season, but they are absolutely one of the best teams of the country right now... assuming their key players can stay on the field. It's going to be a lot harder to impose ourselves physically on Providence, which as a rule manages to be stout without descending into kicking every shin in sight, the way you often get from the likes of Seton Hall, St. John's, and DePaul. I expect the game to look more like the first half of our regular season tilt with them, which was scoreless and 7-3 in shots, than the second half, where Marlon's goal staggered them like an uppercut and they gave up a second thirty seconds later. With that said, despite Providence being the higher seed, the Hoyas should approach this game with confidence and seek to impose their style of play, rathe than looking for ways to absorb the Friars' strengths. Over-under on how many F*** Ed Cooley we expect to hear in the stands on Sunday?

For that matter, if anyone needs a refresher on the first tilt with the Friars this season: an hour of fairly even battle, followed by a deflected goal that psychologically deflated Providence and set the stage for an almost immediate second goal that took whatever wind remained out of their sails:
