I really think Leonsis is underestimating the will of people to stray far from the city center for events. He is going to lose a lot of ticket revenue from MD and DC residents/those that work downtown. It will now be an extra effort to make it to the arena. Also, you can’t tie the event to something else whether that be dinner, museums etc. Philly has stadiums inside the city limit but not in the center and have been fighting for years to make it more central.
I live in NY. There is a huge difference for the draw for an event at MSG vs Barclays. People aren’t getting out of work and making the effort to get out to Brooklyn but they will walk take the quick subway for MSG. Tickets for Knicks games are double or more compared to the Nets. Same with is true for concerts.

Since he bought the Wizards in 2010, the team's record has been 459-593 for a 43.6% winning record. I don't want to do the math, but the Capitals have been really good/elite during most of his ownership. If you go to a Caps game, it's pretty clear the fan base is coming from the suburbs. Barring a new highway, Potomac Yards is a terrible location. It's overly congested now ... I can't imagine how bad traffic will be with a 18000 arena off of Route 1.
Leonsis should take the DC deal and work with city to improve the Gallery Place neighborhood. Yes, he's the owner ... but if you own a professional sports team then you should really try to locate it in a city if possible.
Walking around Gallery Place right now is pretty terrible ... but it can get better. More than the mayor, he has the ability and resources to make that neighborhood better. He should step up and be bigger and better.
(I also attended games at Landover ... getting on a yellow bus with no bathroom and then traversing across the DMV in rush hour traffic was pure torture ... particularly if you had a beer or two before the game ... most students couldn't find Landover on a map and it seemed like every drive out there took a different route. That was bad.)

A "nonbinding agreement." The owner of the Wizards and Capitals has reached a nonbinding arrangement that would move the teams from downtown D.C. to a new arena in Northern Virginia as soon as 2028, potentially upending the regional sports landscape. It is unclear how much of a hurdle that will be in the General Assembly and in Alexandria City Council, though the proposal has already generated significant concerns from neighbors with questions about potential flooding and traffic impacts. “I have a feeling that this can be a big nuisance near us in a place it seems not to be a perfect fit. It is just odd,” said Rafael Lima, a homeowner who lives on the southern end of Potomac Yard and was active in lobbying the city over the new Metro station. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/12/13/capitals-wizards-move-alexandria-potomac-yard/

Knowing GU, they will put their collective head in the sand and hope outside sources can derail this thing. But the opposition in that area after the Amazon and Va Tech deals won’t be nearly as strong as it was, say, for the Redskins stadium back in the 90s. This is all but a done deal, and Georgetown should proceed as if it is happening.

If they keep the arena in DC around for Mystics and concerts, would imagine that's a good outcome for Georgetown. Can stay in DC, pay lower rent, and get better availability for dates and game times.

I know you always trend toward the negative - and with this program the past 30 years who could blame you? - but the fact is that Georgetown basketball isn’t even a factor in this deal. But you seem to be taking great offense to it. It’s up to the school to act wisely now - and we know how that usually goes.

The tie was reported as a nod to Virginia Tech and its adjacent innovation center, conceived in the wake of Amazon's ill-fated HQ2 project. He is appealing to Tech to get this through the General Assembly. I don't care how rich I was (and I am most certainly not), but you would never catch me wearing an orange tie under any circumstance.

I get it, and also got the Va tech connection. But come on - that Syracuse rivalry is DOA. All of the reasons it became such a great rivalry in its day are no longer true. Beyond venue, it’s time for GU to cultivate new rivalries or reactivate old ones that still make sense. Maryland is a great place to start - and maybe playing the Maryland game in Alexandria will make it more of a home crowd for Hoyas!?
