Caleb started the game running point and did that really well on both sides of the ball. His size and skill and understanding of what is needed from a point guard and doing it was a treat. But, at 6'7" the height give him added court vision. His passing and quick decisions were great to see. This part of the game was about the same as when he played with Sidwell against Gonzaga. But, in the Capital Classic his outside shooting was more smooth and wasn't as flat and threes dropped.
Caleb's court play was good not only up and down the court but ease of horizontal play in both directions was really good. HIs latteral movement was really good and started covering Mikey Lewis (Prolific Prep 6'2" point guard heading to St. Mary's College California Gaels, who was Cap Classic top scorer) and Caleb defended with his feet well with Mikey getting by a couple times but was challenged. Caleb then defended players more his own size and did that well and took on the bigger players on the USA side as well drawing a charge or two.
Of the three incoming Hoyas Caleb looked like the most ready to step on the court and help immediately, which is different from the Sidwell v Gonzaga game, where he was covering the Gonzaga 6'10" big and that battle ate a lot of energy on the defensive end, but he handed that task well. Playing his more natural position Caleb had more energy and his 3s dropped and had better mechanics. Caleb also got the the basket powerfully a few times as well as drove and kicked to wide open players. He already was playing like the big Big East guards the Hoyas have had troubles with in the past with attitude and being a bit chippy. He is a physical guard that can defend all levels and could run point well if needed.

I wouldn’t mind Williams getting backup PG minutes along with Mulready though most consider him a 4/3. Williams could be our Kadary Richmond and be a massive mismatch against small guards like Mack and Epps.

Williams could be our Kadary Richmond and be a massive mismatch against small guards like Mack and Epps. Caleb is more of a point guard than Mulready at this point (a better point guard than Epps by quite a bit). Sidwell listed Caleb as point guard and he and Acaden Lewis alternated bringing the ball up, depending on who was covering them and the advantage they had on defense. Caleb doesn't play 3 and definitely isn't a 4. Watching the Gonzaga championship game Sidwll played Caleb as point and off ball guard on offense, but ended up covering the Gonzaga big as he was Sidwell's biggest player (because high school can be messed up like that). Today at Capital Classic and watching him play point and off ball guard the whole game on offense was really nice. He has really good ball IQ and court vision for helping teammates out when he doesn't have the ball (Heath, Ish, Styles, and Epps struggled with that a lot this year - Bristol knew when he should be moving to as did Rowan off ball). Offensively, Caleb create mismatch advantages, like many Big East teams do to the Hoyas. Defensively he is good covering point (needs more lateral and work on his hip movement to change latteral directions better, also needs to get his hands up on defense more out on the wing, but defends with his feet well and cuts off drives quite well. Caleb was also helping on the USA wings and bigs inside to cut off passing lanes and make guards and wings drives to the basket difficult and unsuccessful. He also took turns with Kalani Rooths drawing charges against the USA 6'11" big. Caleb's defensive flexibility is going to be a solid advantage, but does needs to get better with lateral slide quickness and hip speed to change lateral direction more easily. This adjustment could make this tough against really quick small guards until he adjusts to D1 speed and play. Offensively he becomes a serious mismatch as point or off ball guard. His three shots were dropping and weren't flat today, which was good. Getting 3 shots up more quickly would help him (his 3 footwork is a little unusual with one foot back like he is going to take off running, but they are pointed in the right direction (not Stephen Domingo who kept turning his feet farther and farther away from the basket the more he played, but hi his feet were straight he nailed his shots (a TJIII era good shooter coming in and losing his shot).

I initially thought you mean Caleb backing up Mulready. Both backing up a seriously good PG would be great. I look forward to seeing Mulready get his outside shot back as he has a good outside set shot.

Not a surprise. He is a square peg in world of round holes. He is just a basketball player.
I think he will over-achieve his rankings.

Hes the kind of guy I see gradually improving over time and the 2-3rd piece of a very good team in 2-3 years, as long as the pieces around him fit. He can do a lot of things, but isn't necessarily great at any one thing at the moment.
