Desantis chooses to make his announcement on Twitter. This is very big news with Paramount(CBS), Disney (ABC), Comcast (MSNBC and NBC),Warner Discovery (CNN) and FOX sitting on the sidelines for the biggest and most newsworthy announcement in the Republican race thus far. It is now highly likely that all the Republican debates could now be on Twitter excluding and potentially bleeding all the linear cable and TV networks from the US election process. The commercial viability of these networks is now at risk unless they can regain some semblance of journalistic objectivity. It will be interesting if the General Election Presidential debates go to twitter and if Twitter platformed interview shows displace Meet the Press, State of the Union, Fox New Sunday and the like, in the year ahead. Does one ask "Is the 2024 Presidential Election about to become the Twitter Bowl?" How is Twitter doing since EM bought it?

DeSantis did this as a favor to Musk and to get a little added boost from what would have been a staid and quickly dismissable announcement on linear TV. That aside, the commercial viability of Paramount, Disney, WBD, Comcast, or the FAANG companies is not threatened by Twitter, any more than a Tucker Carlson podcast is going to bring down the Murdoch empire. The prisoner's dilemma of Republican candidates almost compels them to act differently, but most will simply get in line and go nowhere. The size of the US cable news markets are very small. Fox has 2.3 million viewers in a nation of 331 million; of these, just 153,000 in the 25-54 age group. Monday's CNN broadcasts drew just 71,000 total in the 25-54 group. More people watch WWE Smackdown on a Friday evening (2.4 million) than Sean Hannity (1.6 million) and Anderson Cooper (300K) combined.

More people watch WWE Smackdown on a Friday evening (2.4 million) than Sean Hannity (1.6 million) and Anderson Cooper (300K) combined. Take a look at the Cable Ratings published by Showbuzz Daily. It has all the linear and cable networks and you will find that the highest rated programs are the NFL and NBA with about 5 million viewers, prime time TV shows like the NCIS or FBI franchises with maybe 4 million viewers and the highest rated cable shows (think the FIVE and Carlson when he was still active and a stray Maddow broadcast) having about 3+ million viewers. The cable market audience sizes are very close to the largest network broadcasts. If the Cable broadcasts are very small then the audiences for NCIS and the like are only slightly larger. And major cable networks depend on National Elections and World Crises to obtain their audiences. Social Media is now making a play for the network/cable world.

And as to Mr. Musk, he could be potentially doing to WBD, Disney and FOX what he did to Ford, GM and Chrysler Jeep in another ecosystem

And as to Mr. Musk, he could be potentially doing to WBD, Disney and FOX what he did to Ford, GM and Chrysler Jeep in another ecosystem What did he do to those companies, exactly? Created a competing company with a $600 billion market value that is more than six times the market cap of GM and F combined as of today. Created a company with 70% market share in EVs compared to the single digits for GM and Ford with a 21 % gross margin while GM and F bleed money in their EV divisions trying to catch up. And it was his forward looking vision that made it happen. Makes you wonder what his vision is for Twitter.

It does make one wonder, but thus far Musk gets an F- for his handling of Twitter, so he has a pretty big hole out of which to climb.

Great rolllout! Ha ha ha. Morons. Great job Musk! Ron DeSantis’s 2024 kickoff on Twitter plagued by technical issues But the novel “Twitter Spaces” announcement with Elon Musk that the Florida governor’s team had hyped as the culmination of his big day was plagued by glitches in the evening. The live chat came to a halt after roughly 20 minutes of mostly silence; by the time it restarted and DeSantis began his remarks, hundreds of thousands of listeners had peeled off. www.washingtonpost.com/elections/2023/05/24/ron-desantis-2024-president-announcement/

The simultaneous Musk/DeSantis face plant made my night. Turns out it’s a bad idea to use the nearly decade old Periscope code to make a presidential announcement. I imagine Musk was warned of this and he just didn’t heed the warnings, per usual.

But I thought this was the start of Musk/Twitter taking down broadcast TV and the cable shows? You only get one chance to make a first impression. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ was a glitch. The Florida governor announced his presidential campaign on Twitter Spaces, in an appearance meant to be a veritable launch hosted by an actual rocket man. But within seconds, it was clear that Tallahassee had a problem. The feed broke, connections got cut off, the hosts seemed confused. It was inauspicious. It also was a black mark on the candidate’s supposed trademarks — expert organization and a comfort with the vanguard of modern media. www.politico.com/news/2023/05/24/desantis-twitter-campaign-glitch-00098748As is usually the case in politics — and otherwise in life — there is room for more than one person to be embarrassed after a calamitous mistake. The 20 minutes of fumbling that preceded the formal announcement by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis of his bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination was not, in itself, DeSantis’s fault. It was a technical failing on the part of Twitter, DeSantis’s chosen venue, and it was irreducibly the fault of Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk. Since assuming control of the social media platform, Musk has had a habit of overpromising and under-delivering, and his site’s failure to accommodate a crowd of relatively modest scale (by internet standards) lands on his shoulders. When DeSantis said the magic words — “I am running for president of the United States” — only 108,000 people were tuned in. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/25/desantis-twitter-elon-musk-campaign-launch/

That is more than four times the number of viewers that watched Musk and DeSantis soil themselves in real time. These guys are all cut from the same lying cloth. I don’t know why anybody trusts anything they say.

Rapper Travis Scott drew 12.3 million virtual concertgoers to his pandemic-era performance on the video game “Fortnite.” Among politicians, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) attracted 400,000 fans to an impromptu Twitch stream of her playing the cartoon space-themed party game “Among Us.” Even a watermelon attracted more viewers (800,000) back in 2016 when BuzzFeed blew it up with rubber bands on Facebook. Perhaps the most tone-deaf moment in an evening full of them was the release by the DeSantis war room of a bizarre web video featuring a disproportionate amount of footage of Musk, one of the richest men in the world, whose brand was built in notoriously liberal Silicon Valley. An alliance between him and an aspiring GOP nominee can’t possibly make sense to your typical conservative — whether of the traditional mold or the new populist variety. It makes sense only to red-pilled tech guys like Musk who believe that, by teaming up with those whose brains are most addled by the internet, they can run the internet. Now, DeSantis, looking for a viable lane in 2024, seems to think that by wooing those same people, he can run the country. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/05/25/desantis-announcement-musk-twitter-internet/

If it had lasted the same duration as the Musk/DeSantis turd, viewership would have been substantially higher.

Haley the Hypocrite but why would she be any different than any of the other MAGA GOP cultists? She was for the Confederacy before she was against the Confederacy. COLUMBIA, S.C. — Amid her barrier-breaking first run for governor, Nikki Haley took time off the trail for an unusual event: A private meeting with two leaders of Confederate heritage groups. The men listened during the 2010 conversation as the Republican candidate assured them that she shared their worldview. She said the Civil War was a fight between “tradition” and “change,” without mentioning the word slavery. She said she supported Confederate History Month as a parallel to Black History Month. And, as the daughter of Indian immigrants, she suggested that her identity as a minority woman could help her take on the NAACP, which was leading a boycott of the state until the Confederate flag was taken off the State House grounds. “I will work to talk to them about the heritage and how this is not something that is racist,” Haley said in a discussion captured on video. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/27/nikki-haley-confederate-flag-charleston/
