It's almost as though Musk is a huge, self-serving a-hole. Who knew?

If Musk wants to purchase a social media entity for $40 billion, and then proceed to turn it into 4Chan, seems like a very stupid financial decision, but whatever floats his boat I guess.
It's not like Twitter's code or the service it provides is particularly unique or difficult to replicate. The only thing going for it is a decent user base, but he's doing a bang up job of driving that away. If Twitter goes belly up, I have no doubt that there will be plenty of alternatives willing and able to provide a more moderated space.

I don't agree - it's not like we're talking about CraigsList or something simple like that - you could give "build your own Craigslist" as an assignment for a class. Twitter is the largest real time cache out there, the scale is enormous, and the only bigger spam problem on earth would be what Google deals with.

MySpace was the biggest social network, until Facebook destroyed it. Now Facebook is a husk, and something called "Tick Tock" is all the rage. At least until it isn't. Twitter has already been largely supplanted by Telegram in many places outside the US. Simply put, where there is a demand for celebrities and Russian trolls to post about whatever it is they post about, there will be options. Google "Twitter alternatives" and you'll find dozens of options--one or more of which will be happy to suck up Twitter's user base after Twitter has fully collapsed into a cesspool.

Facebook has 2 billion daily active users so not quite a husk yet.

As predicted, he’s backed himself into a corner. He’s become the world’s richest right wing troll. Trying to cast companies that don’t want to advertise next to neo-Nazi posts as anti-free speech, not only fundamentally misunderstands free speech (trying to coerce a person or company to endorse an idea with which they disagree is quintessentially anti-free speech, let alone that his formulation of “free speech” really isn’t what the First Amendment guarantees), but simply won’t work. No company is going to hurt its brand because of Musk’s tactics. Twitter needs advertisers far more than advertisers need Twitter. I don’t think Musk is as great a tactician as he fancies himself. Even his dumb polls are transparent covers for his own desires.
