From the WaPo obituary:
Many fans perceived Mr. Russell to be aloof because for years he refused to sign autographs, preferring a handshake and conversation. He described Boston as a “flea market of racism” in his 1979 book, “Second Wind: Memoirs of an Opinionated Man.”
Big John adopted the practice of "no autographs" from Hoya players. I remember that at Hoya Hoop Club athletic awards banquets, he requested that you don't ask the players for their autographs but instead talk to them.
Years after Big John retired, I managed to get the autographs of Mutombo, Mourning, Hibbert and Monroe all on the same sheet of paper. At the 100th anniversary of Hoya Basketball banquet I had a chance to get Ewing to sign the same sheet of paper but chickened out!

I first saw Bill play in person at the Holiday Festival at MSG. Two Jesuit teams were playing, San Francisco vs Holy Cross. It was Bill and KC vs Tommy Heinsohn, future teammates on the Celtics. It was ironic that Tommy (my hero growing up, as my Dad went to HC) won the Rookie of the Year award in 1956, because Bill (in the same class as Tommy) was off playing in the Olympics. The Dons won that game at the Garden by about 16 points. Bill is joining again with KC and Tommy. May they rest in peace.

A great player and a great man. RIP Bill. I'm sure the Laker family would agree.
