This would be really interesting if our basketball program was in a position to justify a league making such a move. Sadly, we're not. There are more than a few teams ahead of us on any list of basketball-first schools that would be attractive to one of the P4 football conferences.

You are suggesting GU should join a football first conference? Even if we had Gonzaga level recent success, we'd end up as a junior partner at best with minimal if any financial or competitive upgrade. The BE works because all of the schools (minus UCONN which simply can't accept that its football program will never be appealing to any major revenue conference) are pulling in the same direction and all invest in basketball at the highest levels. Only the B12 has arguably been more successful in men's basketball than the BE since the dawn of the New BE. Unless there is some dream of football money (which GU would never get), there is no benefit to a move. Note--Gonzaga may be able to negotiate a share equal to the Pac12 football programs, but the Pac12 is not a major conference, so they won't be getting major football conference dollars regardless. The Big 12 was certainly never going to offer Gonzaga a full share. Regardless, the situation is completely different for the Zags. The WCC, minus Gonzaga and St. Mary's, is a low major conference. BYU helped the profile for a few years, and Oregon State and Wazzu will keep it propped up for a couple more. But they'll be gone soon. And when Randy Bennett retires, there is no guarantee that St. Mary's will continue to be a major player. The greatly diminished Pac12 is still a significant upgrade (competition and revenue) over the WCC.

There are more than a few teams ahead of us on any list of basketball-first schools that would be attractive to one of the P4 football conferences. This is not realistic, especially the reality that is P4 athletics. 1. The P4 conferences are tied to long-term media rights deals. They pay a lot ($50-100M per school per year) but new schools must be additive to the rights and not a net zero or a decline. Adding Notre Dame to the SEC would add to the rights, sure. Adding Boston College to the Big Ten, not so much. And it's not like a P4 conference is paying $50M to a school without FBS football, but put that aside for a moment. Nothing about Georgetown right now adds that level value to another conference: not in attendance, not in TV exposure, and not in NCAA tournament credits, where the Hoyas have won one NCAA and one NIT game combined in the past 12 years. 2. Gonzaga is theoretically a fit to the Pac-6 because of location, TV exposure, and its NCAA track record, but a full share of TV rights would still be unlikely if they provide no inventory of games. Realistically, they are one or maybe two other non-FBS programs which can conceivably be in a realignment conversation: Creighton, and, of all schools, St. John's, owing to Brett Yormark's wanderlust about an eastern outpost for the Big 12. But not Georgetown. 3. As part of the House vs. NCAA settlement, P4 schools have agreed to pay up to $23 million annually in revenue sharing to athletes. Georgetown could not afford this and there would be institutional pushback to even consider it. 4. Finally, P4 schools have received NCAA acquiescence... er, approval to expand the scholarship limits for sports. Georgetown has roughly 62 men's scholarships across 14 sports, and 49 of these are concentrated among men's basketball (13), soccer (11), lacrosse (13) and track (12). Under the new guidelines, the cap for soccer jumps to 28, lacrosse 45, and track 45, not to mention baseball (34). Georgetown wouldn't have to add all these, but they would be noncompetitive in conferences that do. Every one of these scholarships (at circa $90K each year + its Title IX cousin) would be eligible for revenue sharing. While your post may be in jest, it's a subject where Georgetown is not even in the range of the consideration set until it earns a seat at the table, which it is not.

www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/conference-realignments-frenetic-pace-reaffirms-pac-12-mountain-west-should-have-merged-all-along/amp/It seems the PAC 7 may have overplayed their hand. Now the MW and PAC 7 both need more teams to maintain eligibility for the playoffs. The PAC was turned down by their attempts to take AAC teams like Memphis, UTSA, Tulane. And the MW is taking the exit money from the 5 defectors and using it to lock down their remaining members. I saw a few other outlets also say that a merger would’ve been the better option in retrospect or at least a swifter 6 team simultaneous steal by the PAC 2 originally. Could just be a negotiating tactic by potential adds, but still not a great situation right now.

Makes any expansion offer more enticing and has a name that will get many eyes on games during the basketball season. I don't indulge in much college baseball, but Gonzaga has a good team in that as well apparently. I wonder if they are getting a full share of rights.

For the love of god just break football away and leave everything else alone! But I’m sure in typical greedy american sports fashion, everything is about to get messed up even worse…
