First call should be to Mike Jones. Which Mike Jones do you mean? Ex-Dematha or current Stephen’s/St. Agnes (who has done a fantastic job both with Xs and Os and recognizing, getting and developing talent)? After watching Dematha alum Jordan Hawkins join the torch fest against us last night I think you probably mean the Dematha Jones. A more college experienced connected guy probably the better option for the captain’s chair (the Bob Wade experience at MD certainly a bit of an object lesson), but someone who knows and has the rep/game to do the area deep dive in recruiting an important element to any change that occurs. Having a local high school coach on the bench as a high level asst certainly a solid way to do that, and there are A LOT of very experienced, savvy options locally that I think we can look to. It should be remembered that MD will likely be trying to rebuild its staff at year’s end, and if we don’t think locally in terms of a rebuild we are gonna get out staffed for sure in a way that REALLY matters for future success… Ex dematha and current VA tech asst coach. He is the perfect guy to get local recruiting back and wants to be a college head. Bob Wade was head of a public school team not even comparable. Mike has also coached for team USA and knows alot of the major players in recruiting. He went into a place where a legend was the coach and kept them on top and bringing in the best talent.

The school fired his own son. Let that sink in for you. His influence is legendary. Not just at this school, but across the country. Across disciplines. It transcended athletics. JT2 is resting in peace, now. Thankfully, his legacy continues. Go Hoyas! The school fired his son a) after getting a permission from pops to also pay his sons millions remaining in the contract b) agreeing to hire his protege as a successor to keep it in the family, c) creating a job post for Ronnie to get paid multiple 6 figures a year for broadcasting other programs when we are playing With all that said, RIP to pops His legacy continues (with the potentially different definition of legacy for us) This is the problem you guys are so concern who controls the Men’s Basketball program and the money. It’s not your money or program. Get it over JT2 legacy lives forever…..

It’s not your money or program. Get it over JT2 legacy lives forever….. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who could respond to this weak comment, but I guess I'm the first. The program "belongs" to anyone who has ever given money to G'town, either as a donation or a grad. It also "belongs" to anyone who has repeatedly sweated blood over its triumphs and failures. So sorry you can't see that.

People don't like JT2 and what they perceive as his control of the program. Clearly, John Thompson Jr. was a giant, put our program on the map, and will forever be a huge figure for Georgetown basketball. The man was and remains a legend in basketball, and he is widely admired. In my mind, the fact that he stuck around after 1999 and continued to play a role in the program was in many ways a good thing. Who doesn't want a legend around? The way he left, which essentially handed the program to Esherick may not have been the best transition plan. But JT3 was a good solid hire (people often forget he really was a successful up-and-comer at Princeton) and succeeded for many years. This was good for the university. We would not have the TAC without that mid-2000s success and JT3. People bristle at "his control of the program" only because in this latest iteration, it has yielded poor results thus far. People are upset because Ewing was put in a position as coach that he likely was not truly prepared for (the results seem to confirm that), and that no other program would have hired him to do, solely because of John Thompson's influence combined with Ewing's greatness. And if it worked out, and we had a few Sweet 16's under Ewing's belt, would anybody care? Unlikely. Like many on here, I was not a fan of the Ewing hire simply because I wanted someone with experience coaching, but once he was hired, I hoped for the best. He had many years of assistant coaching experience in the NBA, he works hard, and he's a Georgetown great. Had he succeeded it would have been awesome for all involved, but that has yet to happen. The fact is John Thompson Jr. put himself out there by pushing Ewing (and I do believe he thought Ewing was a good choice for the program, I do not think he was acting in bad faith) and thus far it hasn't been successful. That's why people do not like it, and why they are concerned that even beyond Ewing (whenever that happens), that the same thing could happen. The decisions that were made in the past are made, and so be it. But the university cannot make the same mistakes over again.

Isn’t Mike Jones the old Radofrd coach? He’s a great coach . Not sure if that’s who you meant I can’t believe some people are still defending Coach Ewings record right now . You can make a case he should be canned today after that game last night . I think I've answered my own question (or what likely SHOULD be the answer): the former Dematha Mike Jones -- had no idea myself the depth of his connection to the high school talent pool/modern game, but just WOW. Great idea... www.usab.com/basketball/staff/j/jones-mike.aspxJust for grins, there’s also a Mike Jones who headed up the pro bono lawsuit against the state of MD that resulted recently in A HUGE win on behalf of HBUCs for discrimination by the state against them (big cash pay out and structural changes to the state system part of the remedy). THAT Mike a great guy with now some rep in the community — but nice as he is, think he has too good a gig at his law firm to give it up The moral of this thread may be that with some names — Mike Jones being one of them — more specificity is needed! (I once left a ticket at will call for a Hoya game for a very good friend that got picked up by the “wrong” Steve Smith). I was quite surprised when a guy I didn’t know from Adam sat down next to me…) Jim Smith's older brother? 😁

The failure of the whole PE experiment is indeed unfortunate.
Pat is a great dude who devoted a good portion of his life, represented the school at a high level and made people around him proud.
Whether you like it or not, this experiment will come to an end, however, most likely at the end of this season.
Whether you have supported Ewing blindly or been critical of him, it’d be great for everyone to 1) appreciate Pat’s for his hard work even if that did not pan out as hoped 2) find a way to remind the school in conducting a fair search in finding the right candidate, our own Nick Saban of the program
Let’s appreciate and remember the legacy, while looking forward to the future.
Go hoyas!

That was a respectful post that sets out one point of view well. However, other fans can and will continue to support both the team and Coach Ewing, and fight for him to remain the coach next year, and hopefully beyond. Here is to hoping that those camps coexist peacefully.

Ewing is the man! The greatest in the history of the program. I won’t think of him any less as a person or a player . The Big East is tough to coach in and good for him for trying but we need a clean slate!!!

Return to Glory?
Is the title just more mockery?
I would settle for a return to respectability and build from there.

Of course. I just hope that will not happen. I am confident that if there is a change, at least the search will be done in the traditional Georgetown model. I hope not to have to find out if that will be the case.

As you have read, the traditional Georgetown model after JT2 was: (1) to have a “one-man committee” (JT2) pick the new coach; and (2) to pick “one of us” (a person somehow related to JT2). In your opinion, is that how the search should be conducted next time? Who would substitute JT2 as that “one-man committee”? Who is available in that “one of us” group?

I think that misrepresents the true state of what happened, although of course Big John (rightfully) had lots of influence.
I would like to see the Athletic Director and President handle the matter internally and very privately whenever the next change occurs.

After all the noise around nepotism and fishy hires in the recent years, the fans deserve some level of transparency. Not to mention handling the matters privately has generated the current state of the program, which is a hot garbage, unfortunate for everyone involved.

Out of curiosity, who were the other 2? Two names at the time were Joe Scott (then at Air Force, then succeeded JT III at Princeton, currently back at Air Force) and Willis Wilson (then at Rice, let go last year at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi). Media chatter about Johnny Dawkins didn't go anywhere, but it never does. John Feinstein has some, well, interesting candidates for the Maryland job. None are likely finalists. www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/01/27/maryland-men-basketball-coach-candidates/

No question in my mind that now is the time to go after Kim English. Young star with Baltimore and Beltway roots. Pat put in the work, had some terrible luck and also I think has struggled with the mentality of the modern athlete. It's clearly time to move on. For my money the No. 1 thing we need is ENERGY. We need a young guy who will instantly rejuvenate the program and fanbase with energy.
Good news is between the portal and instant transfer eligibility it's SO much easier to flip a program around now than it was a decade ago.

Biggest complaint I recall on this board about the Ewing hire was his lack of college head coaching experience. English has been an HC for less than a season.
