So Putin waited until his puppet was out of office and replaced by the Uber competent Biden to launch his incursion? One thing you have to keep in mind is that Putin has been gripped with severe Covidphobia and has basically been isolating himself for the last two years. His grip on reality has been degraded as a result. Fewer different opinions being heard, zero contact with "the people," etc. Old man's been mainlining nationalist history narratives for two years while Covid has killed at least a million Russians and many pressing social challenges remain poorly addressed. He's approaching Nicholas II territory - or perhaps already there.

There is nothing we can do to stop Putin from overrunning Ukraine. Our goal should be to prevent the war from spreading. NATO countries must apply whatever pressure it can without provoking Putin to go beyond Ukraine. So far Biden had handled the situation well.

You’re right- if only we had incompetent, warmongering Republican leadership in the White House, we would have stopped Putin. Or, if you listen to Tucker Carlson, perhaps would have given him an invitation to invade? 🤔 Just curious why he did not act for four years with his puppet in place and waited for a bona fide tonight guy like Biden… Maybe he is crazy… Why throw your asset under the bus?

It'd be great if some lawyer from State Department's Legal Adviser's office is analyzing this. I don't know enough about UN procedures but wonder if the PRC as a permanent member of the Security Council could veto any such move? (The peacekeeping force I was the Force Counsel for was not a UN peacekeeping force because the then-Soviet Union vetoed its creation and we were constituted as an independent peacekeeping organization sponsored by the US, Egypt and Israel with financial support from a dozen other nations).

More sanctions on Belarus. thehill.com/policy/international/595727-belarus-targeted-with-dozens-of-sanctions-over-russian-invasionSWIFT (Nolfi/Keystone/AP) Even amid fire and explosions in their capital, Ukrainian officials have ramped up the volume on a diplomatic request that they say would represent an essential show of solidarity: booting Russia from the Swift global payment system. “Kick it out,” Ukraine’s foreign minister said Friday. “Disconnect Russia,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday. Their urgent pleas seem to be building some momentum for the move. Although President Biden said Thursday that there wasn’t complete support for the move, several countries that had reportedly been on the fence now say they are ready to back the measure. They include Italy, whose prime minister, Mario Draghi, spoke Saturday with Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader said afterward on Twitter that the call marked “a new page in the history of our states,” given Draghi’s pledge of support for the Swift move.

The elephant in the room: would the American leadership and public actually support war against Russia if, in the future, it invaded Latvia (to cite one example) ?

Agree on what it should read (some) but Twitter often results in mangled sentence construction.
