Rupert has new Russian wife that he needs to make happy. So life affirming when two kids find each other like that, amirite? Ah... true love.

For the last few years, the WSJ Op/Ed section has read like your crazy MAGA uncle’s Facebook posts. It’s no surprise that’s infected the “journalism” aspect of the paper. The dishonesty in not including any counterpoints to the pre-established narrative is appalling and evidence of a publication in deep decline, but it’s certainly not unexpected.

WaPo is going downhill as well. See the classic false equivalence here? Equating the Grifter's criminal trials with Hunter Biden's trial. Really? A Monday morning newsroom meeting to introduce Matt Murray, who will take on a new role as a top Post editor, turned contentious as staff members pressed Lewis about Buzbee’s departure and his plans to spin off portions of The Post’s journalism into a new division. Murray, a former editor in chief of the Wall Street Journal, vowed to uphold journalism standards and The Post’s legacy. In his brief remarks, Murray did not share his specific editorial priorities, though he mentioned a few specific stories that will be top priorities for The Post, including the presidential election, the Donald Trump trials and the trial facing Hunter Biden. www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2024/06/03/matt-murray-sally-buzbee-washington-post/

Is Bezos seeking to become Murdoch-lite? Post publisher draws more scrutiny after newsroom shake-up Washington Post Publisher and CEO William Lewis is drawing scrutiny after press reports described him as attempting to dissuade journalists — including those at The Post — from covering his involvement in a long-running British phone-hacking lawsuit. On Wednesday, the New York Times first reported a tense meeting in May between Lewis and Buzbee related to The Post’s plans for a story about a long-running civil case brought by Prince Harry and others regarding a phone-hacking scheme at some of Rupert Murdoch’s tabloids, where Lewis once worked. www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2024/06/06/post-publisher-draws-more-scrutiny-after-newsroom-shakeup/

What is it with these left leaning media groups taking right wing swerves? It simply does not work. I get that right-wingers love their confirmation bias and outright reject anything that doesn’t fall directly in line with their world view as “fake news”, so giving them what they want is like shooting fish in a barrel. (It’s very similar to the way that charmin-soft, egomaniacs on social media need constant approval so they make hard right lurches to get those likes they so desperately need and that right-wing drones will willingly oblige. Think Elon Musk, Bill Ackman, etc.) But it doesn’t work for publications or news services. They just end up alienating their loyal readers, and the right-wingers already convinced that the Post is a purveyor of fake news will never become loyal readers. The Post will have to keep publishing more and more right wing articles to feed the beast further alienating a dwindling left wing readership. CNN numbers are at an embarrassing low after their attempted shift right starting with that Trump “interview”. I don’t know how these companies don’t learn from the mistakes of others.

The United States has never had an election in which: a felon runs for president; a presidential candidate lays out a detailed plan for authoritarian rule; an entire party gaslights the public (e.g., claiming the president was behind their candidate’s state prosecution; pretending they won the last election); and, prominent leaders of one party signal they will not accept an adverse outcome in the next election. Yet, the coverage of the 2024 campaign is remarkably anodyne, if not oblivious, to the unprecedented nature of this election and its implications. It’s not just felon and former president Donald Trump and his MAGA cult followers who get treated with kid gloves by the media. Very few reports in print, online or on TV (other than Jordan Klepper on “The Daily Show”) confront MAGA voters about their inane, illogical conspiracy theories. (This is not to mock them but rather to explore how millions came to believe absurd things and to demonstrate the impossibility of persuading people living on Earth 2.) Coverage of hyped polls maintains the pretext that millions of voters in the MAGA base care about Trump’s policies. (Asking a MAGA adherent whose policies on health care they prefer is absurd.) Political media bent on not offending the GOP or its voters wind up covering an election that bears little resemblance to the real one. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/06/07/coverage-abnormal-campaign-2024/

Telling that Fox Prop did NOT carry the Grifter's campaign rally in Las Vegas. It wanted to edit his remarks to remove some of the crazier unhinged things he said (sharks, electric batteries, MIT?) and the fact he couldn't pronounce the word "military" without slurring it.

Smartmatic seeks to depose four Fox officials as part of 2020 lawsuit The decision represented a victory for Smartmatic, which has argued that the four board members are relevant to the case the company is trying to make: that executives at Fox knew that claims of election fraud made by Donald Trump allies were false but did nothing to stop the network’s coverage, out of a desire to protect the company’s business fortunes. www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2024/06/10/fox-news-smartmatic-board-subpoena/

Meanwhile on Neal Cavuto's show (like Shepard Smith before him, not accepted in Fox viewership's canon):

WaPo going down the tubes. Thanks Bezos who apparently seeks to emulate Murdoch. Incoming Post editor tied to self-described ‘thief’ who claimed role in his reporting At The Post and other major American news organizations, the use of deceptive tactics in pursuit of news stories violates core ethics policies. In Britain, “blagging” — using misrepresentation to dupe others into revealing confidential information — has been a known feature of a certain brand of tabloid journalism, especially before a public reckoning over press ethics began in 2011. Blagging has been less frequently documented in the broadsheet titles where Winnett and Lewis built their careers. www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2024/06/16/washington-post-editor-robert-winnett/
