Duke’s stay atop the Associated Press Top 25 lasted one whole week, as the Blue Devils fell two spots to #3 in the latest poll after losing on the road to then-unranked Ohio State, 71-66. Purdue advanced one slot, to #1 for the first time in school history, after the Boilermakers defeated Florida State, 93-65, and Iowa, 77-70; Baylor moved up two spots to #3 after the Bears routed Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 99-54; California Los Angeles moved up one slot to #4 after the Bruins defeated Colorado, 73-61, and were awarded a forfeit victory in Pacific 12 Conference play over Washington after the two schools were unable to agree upon a date to reschedule their game after their December 5 game was postponed due to COVID-19 issues in the Huskies’ program. Gonzaga fell two slots to #5 after the ‘Zags defeated Tarleton State, 65-55, and were beaten by then-#16 ranked Alabama, 91-82, in the Battle in Seattle.
There are again three Big East Conference schools ranked in the AP Top 25. Villanova remained ranked at #6 after the Wildcats defeated Pennsylvania (71-56) and Saint Joseph’s (81-52) in Big Five play. Connecticut advanced two slots to #15 after the Huskies defeated Maryland Eastern Shore (72-63) and Grambling State (88-59). Seton Hall moved up two spots to #23 after the Pirates defeated Wagner (85-63) and Nyack College (113-67). Just one other Big East school, Xavier, received votes in this week’s polls.
Alabama had the biggest jump in the AP Top 25 this week, as the Crimson Tide advanced seven slots to #9 after a victory in the Battle in Seattle over then-#3 ranked Gonzaga, 91-82. Conversely, Brigham Young had the largest drop, twelve slots to #24 in the AP Top 25, after the Cougars lost in overtime at unranked Utah Valley (72-65) and won at Missouri State (74-68). Memphis (formerly #18) and Michigan (formerly #24) both fell out of the Top 25 this week; the Tigers are now on a three-game losing streak after road defeats against unranked Georgia (82-79) and unranked Mississippi (67-63), while the Wolverines lost at unranked North Carolina (72-51) and defeated San Diego State (72-58). Now ranked in their stead are Ohio State and Louisiana State; the Buckeyes are ranked #21 after wins against then-#1 ranked Duke (71-66) and Pennsylvania State (76-64), while the Bayou Tigers are ranked #25 after extending their winning streak to eight games with a 66-51 victory over Ohio.
The following programs have now had games postponed and/or canceled due to COVID-19 protocols:
American Athletic Conference: Tulane (December 14 vs. Texas A&M canceled; December 18 vs. Grambling State canceled).
Pacific 12 Conference: Washington (December 2 vs. then-#11 Arizona postponed to January 25; December 5 vs. then-#5 California Los Angeles canceled and forfeited; December 12 at #3 Gonzaga canceled).
#3 Duke and Howard do not have any games scheduled over the upcoming eight day period.
