1-0, Hoyas win. Nervy final 75 seconds, with Hofstra free kick from a dangerous position punched away by Augur and then a subsequent cross going past the Pride attackers. On to the next round, against Pitt or Buffalo (that game being played tonight at 7 ET).

Means was tremendous today, as was Leas, but you saw the real Harwood today.

It will be Pitt, who got a second half goal for a 1-0 win themselves.

It will be Pitt, who got a second half goal for a 1-0 win themselves. Pitt had the better of the run of play, but Buffalo was no slouch - one could see how they were on a 16-game unbeaten streak and had only lost once on the year. All things considered, I probably prefer Pitt, who is playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history (and, for that matter, played in their first ACC tournament this year - they hadn't sniffed the postseason since the 2010 *Big East* tournament). The Hofstra game itself was kind of an apotheosis of this entire season - it had the feel of a 1-0 from the start, as so many games have been this year. The Hoyas *should* be scoring more. And the opponents get just enough dangerous opportunities to make it feel like there was some luck and some dodged bullets. But the final whistle sounds and the result is a Hoya shutout all the same. Hofstra was credited with a single shot total and 0 SOG. They're no slouch - we all recall them knocking the Hoyas out of the tournament a few years ago in PKs - and a tough matchup for the Hoyas' style in particular, so it's a quality showing even if it doesn't have the wattage of something like last year's 6-0 first rounder. Kickoff against the Panthers is 2:00 pm on Friday in Tallahassee. And now for some Long Island accent action! Some Hofstra highlights:

Halftime, down 2-1. Pitt took the lead, Manning equalized on a "that looks like a cross, but then it goes in", and then Pitt took the lead about 2 minutes later off a corner kick. Hoyas goal for the second half is probably to do a better job in the center of the field, which the Panthers have mostly controlled so far.

Pitt wins, 2-1. Panthers did a good job of not letting the Hoyas have any prime chances from the run of play. A couple outside the box shots came close but didn't find the corners, and the rare set pieces didn't generate anything either. Oh well. Congrats, ladies, on another Big East double and the NCAA win.

Tough, physical opponent. Hoyas did not handle their counters well in the first half and Pitt snuffed out countless buildups. I could not tell from the announcers whether Vicari got injured - but unusual to see her not finish the game. Also unusual to see a bench yellow so I suspect Dave let the ref know about things that were not being called.

Pitt was certainly better overall and were significantly better in the first half. The game may have been slightly in our favor in the second half but couldn't generate any prime, prime chances. Thought we should have tested their keeper a little more just outside the box.
It says something when you're left wanting more after winning a double conference championship and advancing in the NCAAT.

Next year should be a good one.

Typical 50/50 type calls but nothing overly egregious, so I'm not sure what led to the yellow. Yes, hard to know on Vicari. Don't know if he just thought that Pitt would be defending deeper such that her pace wouldn't be as valuable, but that seems unlikely.

Yes agree about the ref - she could have intervened a bit more when ball possession was lost from some grabs, but nothing game changing. The ref walked directly off the field straight to Dave before the Yellow was given so my suspicion was there was some unwanted unsolicited advice being given.

We were badly outplayed in the first half but came back to give it a "go". No quit. Ends eight straight years as a family member of two ladies that loved their four each. Following the Hoyas has been special. Of the eight years the 2020 team had the best cumulative record and the 2018, 2019 and 2020 teams had two Final Fours. San Jose and Cary, NC. were great. Continue on and we will continue to follow although my streaming bill is going through the roof.

Congratulations to the women on a fine season: only two losses.
Well, at least I have a team still in it: Portland, who is tied with Alabama going into the 2nd half, but it looks like the Tide has the run of action in the first half.

Tough - thought there was one more game in it, before FSU's juggernaut did its thing. Ah well. Much less disappointing than losing at home.
When the second goal went in, I sort of figured that would be it. The great comeback against Butler - on the road, no less - notwithstanding, Dave's teams are generally not ones where you feel confident they have two goals in them against a Top 25 opponent. The ones where you did...those were the College Cup teams.
This year will always be the year of What Might Have Been for me, as Tippins could well have been a season-changer, one that enabled a deep tournament run. That's probably the most disappointing thing, that we didn't get to see how that played out. But injuries are a part of this sport, you have to tip your cap to them just as you do to a simply better opponent or performance.
As it is, this group rang up some serious accolades, flags fly forever, etc. The bar remains high, and that is a very good thing if you want to continue attracting players who aim to test steel against steel. Granted, the "soccer all day and every day" types will probably never choose the Hilltop, so long as Dave runs it more like a true amateur program of student-athletes and less like Senior ODP. But a consistent stream of just a couple of top-flight goalscorers remains the only step remaining for this program to be a national title contender - not out of reach by any means, as Santa Clara has shown.
Will be real interesting to see how the eligibility situation shakes out and who comes back for an extra year... the makings are there...
