Yawn. Gonzaga is still ranked #1. In real news, though, for the first time since December 18, 1961 (when I was a month shy of my fifth birthday), the Associated Press Top 25 does not have so-called blue blood programs California Los Angeles, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky or North Carolina in the rankings. That’s quite a run.
The ‘Zags improved their record to 18-0 after a road win at Pacific, 76-58, and having a Santa Clara contest postponed after the Broncos paused competition due to COVID-19. Baylor remained ranked #2 after a road win at then-#6 ranked Texas, 83-69, and having a Texas Christian game postponed after the Horned Frogs paused competition due to COVID-19; the Bears have now similarly paused competition, and will not be play8ing until next week at the earliest. Villanova dropped two slots to #5 after losing at unranked St. John’s, 70-59, and defeating Georgetown, 84-74 in a late-scheduled contest after the Wildcats’ game against Xavier was postponed, again, due to COVID-19 issues confronted by the Musketeers. Michigan moved up one slot to #3 despite completing a second week of competition pause due to COVID-19 protocols on campus, and Ohio State advanced three slots to #4 after the Buckeyes won at then-#8 ranked Iowa, 89-85.
Missouri had the largest gain amongst ranked teams, moving up eight spots to #10 after wins over Kentucky, 75-70, and then-#10 ranked Alabama, 68-65. Texas had the largest drop amongst ranked teams, falling seven spots to #13 after losses to #2 Baylor, 83-69, and at then-unranked Oklahoma State in double overtime, 75-67.
The Big East Conference again has just two ranked teams. In addition to Villanova, Creighton fell four slots to #19 after losing to unranked Georgetown, 86-79, and defeating Marquette, 71-68, in Milwaukee. Xavier and St. John’s are the only other Big East Conference schools received any votes in the AP Top 25 this week.
There was great shuffling at the bottom of the AP Top 25, as four teams fell out of the rankings. California Los Angeles, formerly #21, lost at then-unranked Southern California (66-48) and had a game against Oregon postponed after the the Ducks paused competition for a second time this season due to COVID-19; Florida, formerly #22, lost to unranked South Carolina (72-66) and postponed a game against Louisiana State postponed after COVID-19 issues hit the Gators’ program; Kansas, formerly #23, defeated Kansas State (74-51) and lost at then#17 ranked West Virginia (91-79); Drake, formerly #25, split on the road at unranked Valparaiso with an 80-77 win and a 74-57 defeat. Replacing them are Southern California, Loyola (Illinois), Oklahoma State and Rutgers. The Trojans won at Stanford (72-66) and against then-#21 ranked California Los Angeles (66-48); the Ramblers are ranked during the regular season for the first time since 1985, at #22, after sweeping Evansville (68-55 and 69-58); the Cowboys are ranked #23 after an 81-78 loss at unranked Texas Christian and a 75-67 double overtime win against then-#6 ranked Texas; the Scarlet Knights defeated Minnesota, 76-72, to move up to #25.
