The top four teams in the Associated Press Top 25 maintained their rankings in this week’s poll. Gonzaga remains #1 after having its only scheduled game, against Santa Clara, postponed after the Broncos paused competition due to COVID-19. Houston and Texas swapped positions, with the Cougars leapfrogging the Longhorns into the top five after wins at Tulane (83-60) and against Southern Methodist (70-48).
Oklahoma had the largest jump amongst ranked teams, moving up fifteen spots to #9 after the Sooners picked up wins at then-#5 ranked Texas, 80-79, and against then-#9 ranked Alabama, 66-61. Fellow Big 12 Conference competition Kansas had the biggest fall amongst ranked teams, as the Jayhawks fell eight slots to #23 after defeating Texas Christian, 59-51, and losing at then-#18 ranked Tennessee, 80-61.
The Big East Conference again has just two teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Villanova remains at #3 after an 80-72 win at Seton Hall; the Wildcats’ other scheduled game, at Connecticut, was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Creighton moved up two slots to #15 after road victories at Seton Hall (85-81) and DePaul (69-62). Connecticut and Xavier also received votes in this week’s poll.
Minnesota, Saint Louis and Louisville all fell out of the AP Top 25 this week. The Golden Gophers, formerly #21, lost at then-unranked Purdue, 81-62; the Billikens, formerly #22, lost to unranked Dayton (76-71) and had a scheduled game at Richmond postponed after the Spiders again paused competition due to COVID-19; and the Cardinals, formerly #25, lost at unranked Clemson (54-50) and had a scheduled game against Boston College postponed after the Eagles paused competition due to COVID-19. They have been replaced by Florida (now ranked #22), Purdue (now ranked #24) and Drake (now ranked #25). The Gators defeated Vanderbilt (78-71) and won at then-#11 ranked West Virginia (85-80); the Boilermakers won at then-#21 ranked Minnesota, 81-62; and the Bulldogs hit the Top 25 for the first time this season after improving to 16-0 with a 78-73 win at Missouri State and a 78-76 overtime win against Illinois State.
