www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/the-greatest-college-basketball-programs-ever-ranking-the-top-teams-of-all-time/20. Georgetown Record since 1938-39: 1,420-868 | Regular-season titles: 11 NCAA Tournaments: 30 | Final Fours: 5 Weeks ranked: 397 | Top-60 NBA picks: 30 POINTS: 663.7 From here on out, it's bona fide powerhouses. The Hoyas defined the 1980s more than any other college program, the sport's top team in its top decade. It was a nondescript program from 1906 until the early 1970s, making the NCAA Tournament only once, when it was runner-up in 1943. A 10-time winner of the Big East regular season championship, Georgetown remains a program with massive national appeal thanks to what John Thompson Jr. built it up to be, which was a highly respected, highly intimidating, irrepressibly proud style of basketball dubbed "Hoya Paranoia." Georgetown won just one title, in 1984, but from 1982-1987 it was one of the best teams college basketball had to offer. Your consensus All-Americans to come out of Georgetown: Sleepy Floyd, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Williams, Alonzo Mourning, Allen Iverson, Otto Porter Jr. Other greats include Dikembe Mutombo, Mike Sweetney, Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert. Few schools have had as many great college big men as Georgetown. Ewing, easily the best player in school history, is now the coach and remains as associated with Georgetown as he is with the New York Knicks. That's a rarity for someone who became a Hall of Fame NBA player. Like a few other programs spread throughout this list, Georgetown lost two full seasons due to World War II (1942-44).

If Coach Big John had had the foresight to see Georgetown as a college basketball dynasty, Georgetown could have and should have been in the top three. All Coach Big John had to do was accept Waymon Tisdale, Grant Hill, Kenny Anderson and so many other great collegiate players that wanted so desperately to play for Georgetown. We would have been Duke with recruiting before Duke was on the map like they are right now. We could have gotten Ferry and so many other Dematha players if Coach Big John had not been so stubborn. Hopefully Coach Ewing can turn this recruiting stuff around once he lands his top five star recruit.

I have not seen the list yet, but I would say this is a major stretch under the best of circumstances. Say Big John had won a few more titles - and there's no guarantee of that, given that Ewing only won one, even though it could easily have been 3. Duke, Kentucky and UCLA have to be the top 3 regardless. There's also no guarantee, as we know, that any successor to Big John would have anywhere near the level of success that Big John did.

I said if Coach Thompson would have recruited those great players, there would not have been a Duke the way we know it today. Basically, all those New York kids and Dematha kids other local kids would have been clamoring to go to Georgetown. Instead, those kids started going to Duke because they couldn't get into Georgetown. This is the reason why Duke is the way it is today. Ferry, from Dematha basically opened the pipeline for players to want to play for Duke. Imagine if Johnny Dawkins or Grant Hill had come to Georgetown. Imagine if Ferry would have gone to Georgetown, Duke would not have been the recruiting juggernaut it is today because most of the east coast kids would be choosing Georgetown and other Big East schools.

Some of this is true, but the same could be said for Lefty Driesell had Len Bias survived. The collapse of the Maryland and NC State programs in the 1980's paved the way for Duke's ascendance. Perhaps the Thompson book will address this. John enjoyed two decades as an elder statesman and wasn't interested in coaching into his 70's. The ACC has four coaches of 70 years or older and none seem to have a retirement plan. Having dodged the Bernie Fine saga, Jim Boeheim will match Joe Paterno's run of 45 consecutive seasons as a head coach this year. He's approaching Connie Mack territory.
