There was a summer league that took place at the Jelleff Boys & Girls club up off Wisconsin Avenue. Weather permitting the games were held on the outdoor court. I believe it is now a parking lot.

The outdoor was a different league played in SouthEast, but that stopped a 2 or 3 years ago. I'm talking waaaaay back to the 70's and 80's. I'm not talking about Anacostia. I don't know what happened in the 90's but I know that they were doing it back in the 70's and 80's. That Anacostia/Barry Farms one that you're talking about, I knew about that when I lived over in that area a few years ago. If it stopped 2 or 3 years ago, that was a good run. Anyways, we need to bring summer league basketball back to the city or make it in Maryland or whatever. Berry Farms is the one I was thinking of. I don't know what happened to that league. But, 2018 was its last year, if I remember correctly. The good runs that used to happen there shifted to other parks as well. There are still pick-up games, but the good players and shifted to a couple other spots. There are also a few private runs that happen, but most of those are just players and a handful of others and it is mostly just former local high school players back from college or pros, with a two of three high school players in the mix.

Kenner has always been at Georgetown, but the pre-cursor to it was another league held at MacNamera and another high school near there in the 80s and prior, the Urban Coalition. Kenner never was outside. Okay, cool. I told you my memory is a little foggy and I was a kid back then so maybe I'm getting it confused with Urban Coalition. Was Urban Coalition also referred to as the Summer League?

There are those who'll tell you that playground ball has been ruined in the last decade and a half by the proliferation and popularity of indoor summer leagues -- the Kenner League that plays at Georgetown, for instance, or the Urban Coalition league that plays at Dunbar. There's some truth in that. There are those who'll tell you that playground ball has been ruined by $150 shoes, and there's some truth in that too. Hey I found an article about the Barry Farms Summer League. It appears they had a league back in the late 70's and the league that folded in 2018 was in picking up the traditions of the 70's Summer League. Very cool! www.thegoodmanleaguelive.com/

Urban Coalition was indoors. Coach Rodrick Turner has an interview with Marcus Wiggins on his Instagram (two parts) that where Turner talks about Urban Coalition with one of the people in the family behind it www.instagram.com/tv/CAZGdEMHk5h/?utm_medium=copy_link and www.instagram.com/tv/CAZNd33ns7F/?utm_medium=copy_linkCoach Turner helped run Kenner for 5 to 7 years and prior to that helped run Rucker Park Summer League. He would pick-up DC area basketball players he thought could hang in Rucker, drive down to DC and take them to NYC to play then bring them back to DC. One of those trips was to pick-up new transfer arrival to Maryland, Byron Mouton, to get him to Rucker to play against Kobe.

Wow - great article (love the cadence too, very playground hoops conversational) - thanks for sharing SS! I'm a native Washingtonian. I've played at Sligo Creek, Hillandale, Candy Cane City --but never with the big boys! One of my intramural basketball teammates played DIII ball at Weslyan in CT in the early 1970s - he and another law school classmate played at Turkey Thicket. We all went to Catholic U Law School which is near TT. Great post- brings back lots of memories. My dad went to law school at Catholic (after college at GU) in the '70s and rode his bike there. He got shot at once and had interesting experiences any number of other times. I had a high school classmate who I played ball with at St. Albans. He was from the East side of town. We had a coach- the late famous Kenneth "Buddy" Burkhead (former Dematha assistant and legendary boys club coach who has a field named after his in upper Georgetown) who used to taunt my buddy by telling him he was "scared to play at Turkey Thicket." During the '90s, some of those (perceived) fears might have been justified! Great blast from the past. I look forward to days of Kenner League in the future. Between now and then, I hope the Hoyas get as much run as possible. I am confident that there is some solid competition at any number of places in DC, including Turkey Thicket.

I'm guessing your dad preceded me at Catholic Law. I graduated from Georgetown in 1977 and Catholic Law in 1980. Yup, the neighborhood in Brookland had a rougher edge back in the 1970s, for sure! 😁

Well, are we doing this??? Why aren’t these questions being asked? It’s still early in summer. If we don’t here anything by July 15th it’s probably not happening
