The top nine teams in the Associated Press Top 25 maintained their rankings this week, as Baylor retained the top spot for a fourth consecutive week. The Bears improved their record to 21-1 and extended their unbeaten streak to twenty games, with a 73-67 victory at Kansas State and a 78-70 win against Oklahoma State. The biggest leap in this week’s poll belongs to Pennsylvania State, which jumped up nine slots to #13 after a 75-70 win at then-#16 ranked Michigan State and an 83-77 win against Minnesota. The largest drop among ranked teams this week belongs to Louisiana State, which fell seven slots to #25 after road losses at Vanderbilt (99-90) and at #11 ranked Auburn in overtime (91-90).
Michigan State and Arizona both fell completely out of the AP Top 25 this week. The Spartans, in addition to the home loss to Pennsylvania State, also lost at Michigan (77-68), extending the MSU losing streak to three, while the Wildcats defeated Southern California (85-80) and lost to California Los Angeles (65-52) in home court action. Replacing them and returning to the rankings are Marquette (now #18) and Texas Tech (now #24); the Golden Eagles defeated #19 Butler 76-57, while the Red Raiders defeated Oklahoma (69-61) and won at Texas (62-57).
There are now five Big East Conference teams ranked in the AP Top 25, including Marquette. Seton Hall moved up two spots to #10 after road wins at Georgetown (78-71) and at then-#10 ranked Villanova (70-64). Villanova, now on a three game skid, fell five slots to #15 after the Seton Hall loss and a 79-76 loss at #19 Butler. Butler remained at #19 after the Villanova win and the Marquette loss, and Creighton fell two slots to #23 after a 73-56 loss at Providence and a 94-82 win against St. John’s. No other Big East Conference teams received any votes in this week’s poll.
