Another solid 20 pt win with Mac out most of the game -- very good job by the Hoyas of not playing down. Now the fun begins. KEEP IT UP!

10-3 was my goal for the OOC schedule with a full roster, so the fact we overcame what we did and still got 10 wins is impressive.
If we can go 9-9 in the BE this resume has us back in the tournament and while that was the original goal, it would be impressive and that much sweeter given all that has gone on.

Finished with 18 turnovers and 12 assist. I thought there was less ball movement and more dribbling today and as a result less open 3 opportunities and more turnovers. Timothy was the star of the game.

Timothy was the star of the game. Very few skip passes, more dribbling, turnovers, etc unlike the road trip and Cuse game. It’s gotten a little sloppier in this homestand. Hopefully they’ll clean it up knowing the competition is going to be better.

Proud of the guys today. Responded to an American team that came ready and crisp. Stepped up after your best guard goes out for the game; hope Mac is ok and ready for Tuesday. Got a convincing win, got tons of work in lineups without various players at time: Pickett early due to foul trouble, Mac after going out, Yurt after his dominating run. Allen and Moseley held the team together and kept everyone focused while both filling up the stat sheet, we are lucky to have two Senior leaders going into BE play. When Yurt is automatic, he's unstoppable...I can't wait for the games he wins it himself. Timmy I will be good the more he plays and trains, he's built like a truck. Great way to end the off-season, new look Hoyas are undefeated! Let's keep it going through BE play, starts in 3 days! Go Hoyas!!

Better ball movement in this half leading to good 3s and Hoyas win going away. At least I was half right!

Tim looked better than Q today He really did. He seems to have better hands than both Yurt and Q and his reach is ridiculous and I love his aggressiveness for such young (inexperienced) player.

Solid win factoring in Mac's injury and another off day shooting from the perimeter again. Thought we could have made the margin far greater if we had really wanted to, but Pat (smartly) opted to give time to develop Q and Timmy rather than get Yurt his numbers. Additionally, with a Tuesday game looming, it makes sense to rest Yurt as much as possible to keep him fresh for a much more important conference game.
Mac injury was indeed a bad break; did not seem to be much intent there from the American player who was just going for the ball. Really could have done without all the negativity (and really, all game long) from Elmore and Graham though. Those two have been atrocious to listen to the last 2 games. Hopefully Mac is alright for Providence.
While I thought Allen mostly played a smart game, I think he has do a much better job demanding the ball in transition. I am honest-to-god terrified anytime Blair tries to do anything but spot up and shoot 3's. His handle and decision-making just isn't where it needs to be in order to consistently convert fast-break opportunities.
The enigma that is Pickett continues. Decently active on the boards, but still very weak in traffic for a guy with his size and above-average athleticism. The early fouls due to laziness need to stop as well. We can't have him sit for prolonged stretches in conference play; although I've been pleased with how our guards have crashed the glass, BE teams will make us pay for going 4 guards for extended periods of time.
Little bit of everything from Timmy, but you can see the promise. The agility and motor are big positives, although it's clear he's trying to do too much too early and may not clearly understand his defensive responsibilities and assignments yet. That being said, the effort is there and with time and assuming he puts in the work, I could see him being a BE-caliber starting 5 down the line. That's a lot more than I think any of us could have reasonably expected a few weeks ago.

wahab might be setting a record for fouls per minute this year If I had to guess, I would say that Don Reid (junior year?) might have that record locked up.

Really could have done without all the negativity (and really, all game long) from Elmore and Graham though. Those two have been atrocious to listen to the last 2 games. Elmore was paired with Wayne Randazzo last week and Scott Graham this week. In both cases, however, I appreciate Elmore's analysis because of his experience--as a former collegiate All-America and NBA veteran, he has little patience for big men that aren't giving it 100% and that's where Pickett is right now. The Eagles were DOA in the second half, Mac was out of the game and Yurt played six minutes--Pickett should have dominated and instead shot 2 for 6 in 19 minutes, missing three of six free throws. For the third leading scorer on the team, Pickett wasn't playing like it today. As analysts go, former coaches seem to do the best, though not all--Pete Gillen seems to be channeling Al McGuire in his rat-a-tat-tat cadence. But I'll take a Harvard Law grad like Len Elmore anytime over a generic analyst from the Newhouse School of Communications.

Overall it was a sloppy performance and kind of a post-holiday letdown. However better to get this out of the way before Tuesday. Warning signs today as to how thin the bench is when Pickett is in foul trouble. McClung being out did not hurt but better hope that his vision is fine by Tuesday. Wahab is enthusiastic but is going to have to reign in some of the nervous energy if he is to provide meaningful back-up minutes to Yurtseven. Happy for younger players to get some minutes and for George M. to play well in a limited role.

Nice to see a convincing win, despite Mac and Omer giving us 37 minutes total. Looks like Coach and the team are trying to get Jamorko some confidence, and I’m hopeful it will pay off.
Refs had no control of this game, and made a lot of weird calls in both directions. Hope Mac is okay.

I love Yurt and what he brings but I do have 2 worries. One, that turnaround, fade away jumper is sweet but most times when he takes it he is being double/triple teamed and there is someone wide open on the wings. Which brings me to my second concern. Even making those shots puts us in the 2 versus the 3 conundrum. Can we beat teams like Marquette and Nova playing old school, score in the paint when our opponents are raining 3s? Maybe drawing fouls will offset the point differential but I really wish Yurt would look for the open perimeter shooter more.

Maybe drawing fouls will offset the point differential but I really wish Yurt would look for the open perimeter shooter more. For one, Yurt is shooting 59% from the field and 60% in his last 6 since the beginning of the roster turnover. Not sure there's a whole lot more he can do consistency-wise to convince you that getting him paint touches and letting him operate inside of 12 feet is a formula for success for us going forward. On top of that, with all those post-ups he's drawing fouls which is getting us into the bonus quicker. As an excellent FT shooting team (34th nationally), this is a huge part of our offense that doesn't necessarily show up in his stat line. Perimeter shooting comes and goes, even for the best teams. We got on a hot streak ourselves for a few games and now have regressed to the mean. If anything, we should be more concerned with closing out on shooters/defensive rotations, hitting the glass, and cleaning up the turnovers (i.e. things we should be able to control) rather than worrying about running into a perimeter-oriented team that may or may not have a good day from outside.

Again, as Pitino proved 30 years ago, trading 2s for 3s can take you a long way. I agree about drawing fouls but when I look at how the game is played today and how many times we have been burned by teams that get on one of those "occasional" hot steaks I just wish Yurt had a better feel for the double team. Going forward he will find himself playing against a lot better big men (visions of Seton Hall's Gill and Ojabwe getting 15 blocks against Maryland) and his ability to decide when to pass out of the double team (and our ability to swing the ball and hit the open 3) will probably determine if we are a tourney team this year.
